Press Review Curriculum Requirements At Forum
The Bulletin Forum opened with a discussion of curriculum requirements led by Professor Donald B. Ritchie of Botany and Associate Professor Robert Lekachman of Economics. About 30 students and faculty discussed English, the Contemporary Society requirement and Advanced Placement. Ritchie argued for keeping the status quo noting students benefit from forced exposure to certain courses and that many would skip them otherwise. He also said he would resist adding more requirements. Lekachman called the system not disastrous but lacking intellectual rational basis and attributed requirements to tradition and political compromise. He proposed replacing catalog two with one for a given requirement.

Barnard May Cancel Spring Formal Over Apathy
Barnard may cancel its Spring Formal set for Friday April 26 due to low student turnout. Chairwoman Barbara Lander notes only about thirty couples have RSVP’d and costs reach $1700, with attendance dropping despite ticket price cuts from $8 to $5.50. She blames student apathy and Columbia College’s poor calendar coordination for the conflict with Glee Club Concert and Junior Prom.
