Three die in North Freedom house fire struck by lightning
A family of Albert Boettcher, his wife, and their young daughter died when a lightning struck home south of North Freedom during a storm Sunday night. The father rescued two children before perishing. Neighbors found the remains in smouldering ruins with the father missing a hand replaced by an iron hook. The family resided at the Stein brink farm, Maple Hill settlement. Funeral services were held at the Lutheran church in Leland.

The species once darkened skies over Sauk County, with old hunters selling carcasses for hog feed and wagons, and the last known bird died in Cincinnati years ago.
