Lone Rock Tornado Tragedy Leaves Many Injured and Dead

A tornado struck Lone Rock Tuesday night causing extensive destruction. Editor P C Pitkin died in the Farmers Bank collapse and several residents including Clara Hoppe 14 and Donald Hoppe 5 killed outright. Dozens more injured, with communication cut off and property losses estimated at 375000. The same storm wrecked St Luke's Church near Plain and several farmhouses.

Tornado Toll Wreaks Havoc Across Wisconsin Countryside

Read of May 21 storm in Baraboo area with wrecked barns and homesteads. Deaths include Fred Buelow and Martin Yanke from falling trees. extensive damage to cemeteries, churches, and farms from Plain to Prairie du Sac and Honey Creek.

Destructive cyclone damages homes and church in Plain

In Plain a severe storm wrecked multiple homes including those of Casper Volk Alois Beck and George Brei Jr. The Beck four year old boy was killed by falling timbers. Barns and outbuildings collapsed, cattle killed, and windows shattered. A four week old Oakland car and livestock were lost near O D Schoenman. The $100000 Catholic church suffered destruction.

McGinty Case Decided Against Brotherhood in Railway Suit

Anna McGinty sued the Brotherhood of Railway Trainmen after years in court. The jury awarded $1880.50 in damages to McGinty and her attorney, J. T. Dithmar, moved for costs to be charged to the defendant.

Soldiers Camp at Kilbourn on Portage Route

More than three thousand soldiers reached Kilbourn on the Portage to Camp Robinson on Thursday. The wet, windy march from Portage tired both men and horses, tents were set along the highway near the cemetery, and the scene included drums, bands, Red Cross, and wagons. A storm drenched the camp and a later march took the column onward in a light rain turned to a small lake by Jupiter Pluvius.

Uncle Sam Lists Useless Jobs After July 1

The notice lists occupations barred to draft age workers after July 1 including elevator attendants, footmen, ushers, bathhouse attendants, theater staff, hotel clerks, and domestic workers. It notes performers in legitimate concerts or plays are exempt and that baseball players’ status awaits a General Crowder ruling.

Exit from Woods After Night Ride

Wagons moved through the woods with drums beating and song. It took more than two hours to clear the area and ensure no stragglers or property were left behind.

Tornado carries away roof and part of barn near Worth home

D W Worth reports a tornado ripped a roof and barn section from his house, sending seven or eight rafters and ten sixteen foot planks aloft. He believes the V shaped roof carried straight up, traveling over trees toward Ed Wieglow and George B McGilvra’s farms, with pieces found along the way. The Worth family sought shelter in the cellar as the storm passed.
