Baraboo officials announce new safety measures after a series of incidents. The plan includes enhanced lighting, additional patrols, and community outreach to reduce risk and improve public security. Local residents and business leaders support the initiative.
The Chicago and Northwestern safety committee held its last Baraboo meeting with all members present and inspected Baraboo and Madison conditions. Officials noted 30 percent fewer deaths and 34 percent fewer injuries in year one, with year two expected to show further declines as work expands. The movement has spread nationally and internationally, with Japanese railroads showing interest. The committee includes Baraboo and Madison officials and employees from multiple departments.
Mrs. da E. Hazen writes from La Crosse praising their location at 1307 Caledonia street and saying they like it there very much.
Stephen A. Douglas born 100 years ago. Alexander Toole recalls Douglas speaking at Pittsfield Illinois, teaching school and naming listeners. The statesman discussed the Missouri compromise squatter sovereignty and great issues. J F Kartack recalls hearing Douglas on a train platform. William Onahan credits Douglas for making Lincoln known to history.
Mme Ida Hancock Ross wife of Judge Erksine M. Ross died in Los Angeles. A pioneer and arts patron with a fortune estimated at 1,500,000 she supported charity and public benefactions. She was daughter of Count Augustine Haraszthy founder of Sauk City and linked to Polish and Hungarian nobility.
Lloyd C. Daniels of Reedsburg and Mrs. Carrie Butterfield were quietly married last evening at the bride’s mother's home, with Rev. E.O. Coontz officiating. Only family and two witnesses attended, and the couple will reside in Reedsburg where Daniels runs a harness business.
Governor McGovern signed the George Carpenter bill creating a nine member commission of three senators and six assemblymen to investigate moving the state fair from Milwaukee. The committee will report to the current session.
Letter from Rev. C. Williams, dated March 26 1913 from the Magdalena River, describes extreme heat, a slow Antioquia line boat, six stranded steamers on sand bars, and a new gold mine funded by the Guggenheims with 1.8 million dollars. He plans to hire cargo mules to reach Puerto Wilches and then Puerto Santos to meet his horse, with 11 buttes needed for five mule cargos, while awaiting mule passage.
A new law prohibits sale of tobacco to any minor under 16 without parental or guardian order. Penalty for violation ranges from ten to twenty five dollars. Officials say the act should curb tobacco use among young boys where it has become prevalent.
The daughter of U.S. senator Robert M. La Follette, Miss Fola La Follette, emerged from obscurity as she joined a band of girl pickets in a New York garment workers strike. A former actress, she embraced the spotlight and even treated arrests as a joke, sharing one of her best picket smiles in Baraboo Daily News photos.
The St Joseph’s church ladies staged two lively nights at the school auditorium with children's performances, a Gladys Dwyer piano solo, a newsboys picture, a Japanese maiden number, comic duet by Mrs Andre and Miss Ida Melz, a Kenneth Friend jewel dance, young chorus, and a eight girl night drill. Proceeds supported the school.
Miss Nellie Walrath and E. E. Scoville wed at the bride’s parents home in Lake Street. Rev H Mueller performed the ceremony under yellow and white arches. The couple fled by auto toward Portage, with relatives scouring town before a car was rumored waiting. they plan to visit southern Wisconsin before returning.
Irvin Schneller of Baraboo has taken charge of the Witwen store, assuming leadership duties and directing daily operations.
Charles W. Waddell of Rogers Arkansas urges a plan to deepening the Mississippi valley bed by 10 to 20 feet to create a deep waterway and prevent flood damage. He argues dredging would reduce levee construction, save millions, and protect cities from high flood crests, proposing government action and dredge crews.
Southern Wisconsin Power buys a large quantity of cable to build a transmission line from Portage to Prairie du Sac linking with the central station near the Milwaukee road depot. The line will cross Caledonia Merrimack and Prairie du Sac and transmit to Milwaukee and other cities.
