Civil action filed in circuit court by J G Wells and others seeking partition of property. Plaintiffs allege ownership interest and request court to divide or adjudicate shares. Defendant unnamed at this time. Case records indicate common heirs and parcel location within the county.
In the March term circuit court Judge E Ray Stevens granted a divorce in the Wells case from New York City and Baraboo. The partition suit determined Mrs Wells owns one third of a 170 acre farm west of town with sale to occur later. Rents six year total about 1500 offset by 800 improvements and 500 taxes leaving Mrs Wells share 71.16. Witnesses and attorneys listed.
Mr and Mrs Floyd Newell reported their horse and buggy stolen from a hitching spot by the Y M C A last night at about 11. Police searched and at 2 am Officer J E Buckley found the rig tied near the Baptist church and returned it. Buckley has a clue and will investigate. An offense with severe punishment if criminals are caught.

In Reedsburg the veteran ranks are thinning as aging members pass and younger neighbors step forward to fill leadership roles in local groups and service clubs.
Charles S. Briggs of Excelsior, a Civil War veteran, died Wednesday June 12 in Reedsburg after a period of ill health from multiple diseases. Born August 30, 1839 in Charleston Montgomery County New York, he came west before the war and was nearly 75 years old.
Mr. Briggs remembered Co. E 12th Wis with many brothers marching together. A list of 17 pairs includes Gillespie, Griffin, Sexton, Briggs, Bennett, Harrison, Eighmy, Truell, Stowell, Gloyd, Knapp, Wharry, Squires, Coleman, Freer, Lawsha, Montange. The regiment organized at Camp Randall Sept 27 1861 reenlisted 1864 mustered out July 16 1865. Commanders were Col. Bryant and Col. Proudfit. Original 1,045 with 622 recruits. 96 killed, 229 died of disease, 4 by accident. Transported 3,159 miles by steamboat, 2,506 by rail, 3,838 on foot. Joined Grant in Tennessee after first going to Kansas and fought in Mississippi Georgia and South.

A stranger posed as a railroad conductor at Dalton’s shoe store during the circus excitement and stole two pairs of shoes. Joe, a sleuth, tracked the suspect to a downtown venue and the thief was found intoxicated. Chief Curry detained him at the Portage police station.
Mrs Matte V Stewart widow of Frank M Stewart received a 1601.60 draft from the Equitable Fraternal Union home office in Neenah Wisconsin, the full value of the fraternal certificate. Stewart, a lumber office worker, died after a four month illness from spinal cord lesion. He also held 1000 in Beavers and 1000 in New York Life.
Mrs Helen Braun Malloy of Junth rop Michigan is visiting at the home of her parents Mr and Mrs Carl Braun on Linn street.

Eugene Stewart’s son Clinton suffered serious bruising after an elderly cow trampled him at Cassell while playing near a calf. The incident highlights hazards around livestock on rural farms.
