Madison High School band won first place in the class B competition at the state boys band tournament in Kilbourn. Richland Center led class A with Eikhorn second and New Holstein third. Baraboo attended. prize money was $100 and a silver cup for Madison.
A prospector reports locating iron ore at the valley headwaters of Big Creek feeding into the Baraboo River near La Valle. He has worked for some time and says extensive surface and subsurface ore deposits exist, with many tons potentially available.
Walter Page of Fairfield experiences a runaway team at about 12:45 on Fourth Street. The buggy tipped him out near Shoe Shine Parlor and the horses dragged it along turning into A Dixon property then the alley behind Reinking store. Page escaped injury though the hat was dented and dust covered the street. The buggy broke apart and the horses were unharmed.
W C Schulze proprietor of the South Side Drug store expects to close the local store about June 15 after which time the remaining stock will be moved to Racine. Schulze bought the store a year ago, formerly Whitman Drug Co, and will move drug equipment to Racine to partner with another in the business.
Miss Mytle Allen travels to Plat teville for commencement exercises as a guest of Mrs Ray Bushnell. Bushnell is formerly Dorothy Baer of Baraboo and accompanies Allen to the event.
C P Winslow head of the Forest Products laboratory warned that U S timber is cut five times faster than it regrows. He traced historic timber regions and predicted a national lumber supply problem within decades. He outlined production changes from waste reduction to improved drying preservation glues and chemistry. Pennsylvania Day honored Risley and Trempey with music by the high school quartet.
R W Jeffries owner of Jeffries Electric has set up a radio phone receiving station in the former J B DonovanDrug building capable of distant messages. He connected with Schenectady NY and heard clear signals via a loud speaker. Weather and market reports come from the University of Wisconsin radio division. A short lecture on radio phone use followed the market report. He plans to install these radios in private homes later.
The Sauk County Short Horn Breeders association held its annual meeting in the courthouse on Wednesday May 31. J L Hornmey of the American Short Horn Breeders Association spoke on the Short Horn outlook and the pure bred cattle industry. He noted Chicago market prices for pure bred beef cattle and urged members to raise better stock, avoid speculation, and run affairs with businesslike methods. Officers elected include Lee Baer president Albert Templin vice president Frank Morley secretary treasurer and an executive committee of Mrs Walter Pierochin Chas Pearson Alvert Grosinske Carl Koenig and Robert Morley.
Graduation exercises took place at the Al Ringling theater with 149 pupils marching in led by County Superintendent Miss Jessie C. Martiny and supervised by Miss Linda Barry. Diplomas were presented by Supt. Martiny to graduates from Baraboo Bear Creek Dellona Delton and many other communities alongside musical selections and an address from S. M. Thomas.
The Twentieth Century Club met at Mrs. Henry Mertzke's Warner Road home on June 1 after 1901 for planning the coming year's programs. President Mrs. James Hill reported on the Seventh District Federation convention at Manston May 11 and 12, praising Mrs. J B Chandler's co operative service speech and the staff president's leadership.
Lieut. W. F. Reed, navy balloonist from Milwaukee, started Wednesday with 12 competitors and landed Friday at 10 05 a m in the Ozark mountains after 445 miles and about 80 hours aloft. Maj. Oscar Westover previously landed in Canada after 911 miles in 19 to 20 hours, a record flight carried in a gale at about 50 miles an hour.
Graduation exercises at Lyons Church honored five ninth grade graduates Wallace Harris Ross Hansch Lillian Baumgarten Frederics Brown Sperh Veriataus Hattle. Judge James W. Hill spoke. diplomas presented by T. B. Towle as pupils completed freshman year. Mrs Elizabeth Vandeveer returned home to Delton after visiting Lyons friends.
Baraboo High School announces the class of 1922 commencement events with a June 6 play at Al Ringling theater and a full week of activities ending June 12. The class motto is Higher and Higher but Only Step by Step. flower violet. colors green and silver. Graduates listed by academic track include Commercial, English, Latin, and Scientific courses with numerous names.
Miss Alice Morley of Reedsburg is reported to have smallpox. She is the daughter of Thomas Morley and is the illness case highlighted in the local notice.

Sheriff H C Neitzel found a two gallon jug of high grade moonshine in a hayloft near the county hospital. Despite many locals searching with magnifying glasses, the sheriff is wary to return the bottle lest a rightful owner claim it. The jug, nicknamed the White Mule, has diminished contents but remains in custody.
