La Valle Woman Fined for Unmailable Mail
Anna Krause of La Valle pleaded guilty in federal court at Madison to sending unmailable matter through the mails and was fined 100 dollars by Judge Sanborn after stating a quarrel with her brother in law led to mailing the letter. James Murray of a Janesville area farm pleaded not guilty to giving liquor to soldiers at Camp Grant and was held to the federal grand jury under a 2500 dollar bond.

Northwestern train No 512 rattled Madison overnight after its whistle valve stuck following a departure from Okee. From 4 40 to 5 40 a 200 pound boiler vent produced a piercing roar, drawing crowds to the roundhouse while police and fire crews attempted to muff the noise and reroute the engine to Chicago.

Gasoline Flatiron Explosion Fatal in Wakeman
Word reached E S Brswell that Mrs. Barnes of Wakeman Ohio died following a gasoline flat iron explosion on Wednesday afternoon. Funeral services were set for Sunday. Ed Brswell and his wife had been in Ohio to visit relatives and returned after news of his mother’s serious illness.

Vehicle fire destroys farm family car near Viroqua
Joseph Scholl and family returning from Taylor had their auto burn and be destroyed near Virogqua while en route home from farm work for Ray School who was drafted. They escaped with nothing but the clothes on their backs as flames followed from beneath the car. Alvin Scholl, following in another auto, alerted Joe who pulled the cushion before the blaze engulfed the vehicle.

War era Y M C A summer school marks strong attendance
F A Bailey reports the Lake Geneva Y M C A college summer session drew near 700 students with 195 in the war work class earning red triangle badges for service in France or cantonments. The four week course ends July 25 and participants then join khaki duties at home and abroad. About 1,500 people attended the month including faculty, families, friends and 125 camp employees.
