Horse Stolen From Lyons County Treasurer’s Farm
County Treasurer C M Du Bois found his horse missing from the Lyons barn about 5:00 AM. Officer J H Buckley later reported the horse recovered on the south side near the Dyrud residence by the roundhouse. The horse was not severely treated and was returned to its stall after Du Bois’s Baraboo trip.

Child dies after brief illness in Portage
Teddie Peck five years old son of Mr. and Mrs. S H Peck died about 7 PM after a few days with chronic Brights disease. The family camped at Friggsville and returned to Portage when illness began. He leaves a brother and sister. Funeral was at the Portage home Sunday at 1 PM and burial followed in Baraboo.

Would Build Canal After Mississippi Floods
In Chicago a flood convention heard Robert R. McCormick urge a large canal to divert Mississippi waters. He outlined three route options from St. Paul to Green Bay 259 miles La Crosse to Milwaukee 185 miles and Galena to Chicago 152 miles. He cited this year’s flood damage at about 200 million dollars and argued the project would be profitable.

Stranger steals watch in barn crime near Okee
A stranger asked to sleep in the Carncross barn near Okee and vanished with a gold filled watch from a Carncross son. Sheriff Chase traced him through Dane, Waunakee, and Mendota, found the watch, and the man named Fred pleaded guilty before Justice Mandeville, receiving 80 days. Officer Chase escorted him to Portage.

Bear encounter in Delton woods ends with cub dead
Pattison Murphy recalls a horseback excursion where he grabbed a cub, drew a bear’s attention, and fled as a hunt began. Bears disappeared into a tamarack swamp while three dogs pursued. two dogs later returned, and one cub died. The next day other bears were killed at Coon Bluff by local residents.

Mrs Van Etta Dies in Madison After Ill Health
Mrs Van Etta passed away Thursday afternoon in Madison after a period of feeble health. She was married to a well known Madison hotel man who died seven years ago. Born in New York in 1848 she came to Madison with her parents at age ten. Her first husband was John H Purcell a first lieutenant in Shermans army at New Orleans.

The Wisconsin section of the Winnebago Indians accuse the Nebraska branch of cheating them on annuities and a delegation led by John Delarouge Ray Good Bear Moses Kekoora John Good Bear and John Cloud met the U S marshal to file a complaint. Deputy Marshal Appleby will contact the Indian affairs commissioner to seek clarification.
