In a school address 83 superintendent A C Kingsford urged students especially boys to work hard while in school and avoid smoking. He warned tobacco harms a student’s progress, citing a chronic smoker who fell behind his peers in earning a diploma. He urged banning smoking from high school entrants in the near future.
The guide explains farmer deductions for the new federal income tax. It covers labor for land preparation cultivation harvesting and marketing, seed and fertilizer costs, livestock care and feed, repairs to farm buildings and fences, and small tools. It notes machinery costs are not deductible but operating costs are. It clarifies income recognition for crops produced in 1916 and sold in 1917 and that 1917 crops on hand at year end need not be counted.
The sum reported as more than $62,000 taken from the army bank at Camp Funston was recovered Wednesday from concealed location in Captain Lewis Whistler’s quarters. He killed himself when found. Director General McAdoo said rail rate laws and regulations stay in force under government operation after a delegation’s meeting with the National Association of Railway and Utility commissions.
At the Congregational Church in Baraboo fifty four new members were welcomed at a social reception held Thursday. They signified their desire to join during recent services in the tabernacle and were addressed by Rev. J. Lloyd Smith. More members will be received later.
Beginning around Christmas thrift stamps went on sale in all Sauk county post offices. By Wednesday night Postmaster Alger Pearson reported sales at 6400 dollars, excluding Reedsburg. Baraboo led with 4400 dollars, La Valle reported 600 dollars, and rural carriers push through snow to spread the program. A countywide two week drive starts next Sunday to urge every citizen to invest.
A small audience attended the Sauk County Horticultural Society winter convention. Sessions were in the courthouse and the high school auditorium. William Toole presided and Mrs. L. H. Palmer served as secretary. L. M. Jacobs spoke on The Home Vegetable Garden and discussed urban gardening. Whitney Allen urged one plant per box for strawberries, while others favored fertilizing and thorough cultivation. Henry Tinkham and R. H. Roberts spoke on roses and spraying for fruit, emphasizing informed mixtures. Mrs. F. H. Horstman praised The Home Flower Garden, and Dr. Ball proposed picking apples in sacks. The evening featured A. C. Kingsford’s conservation talk and War Gardens in Baraboo by C. A. Hoffman.
The Baraboo Y M C A physical department expands with new members and a larger annual basketball tournament. Teams entered include Rail road Woolen Mill Farmers Electricians Clerks Bankers and Lawyers with a complete player list forthcoming. A four team roller ball event and a checker tourney are planned and a father and son banquet is slated for February 15 with a live committee. A letter from the attorney general’s office to Claren T. Markham of Beaver Dam says town boards like Fox Lake may regulate liquor sales on Sundays. It notes a town resolution banning sale, give away, or barter of intoxicants on Sundays and Election Day with fines from 1 to 50 dollars.
The Evangelical church building board purchased steel and windows for the church at Ash and Fifth streets at a price lower than a year ago. Erection was postponed last spring due to a lease but the parsonage is under roof and construction will proceed as spring arrives.
About fifty friends and neighbors gathered at Mr. and Mrs. H. H. Bates home in Greenfield on Tuesday evening January 15 to bid farewell before their move to Idaho. The event featured games, children, and singing followed by refreshments and a purse presented to the couple.
At Wonewoc John Lebrecht lost two pocketbooks in one day. The items contained over $100 in bank paper and money.
Baraboo council vote assigns city the expense and upkeep of a skating rink for boys and girls. A space on the river will be cleaned for the rink, reflecting a municipal commitment.
