Baraboo Board Tackles Post Audit and Road Plans

The Baraboo county board revisited a 1916 audit of Highway Commissioner G H Post and disallowed a $1919.70 claim for past services. The panel also settled highway damage claims, discussed Spring Green light bills, and toyed with funding a cement road to Devils Lake pending Madison’s bequest decision.

Conference and Jubilee Held at German Lutheran Church

A conference jubilee honored Rev. H. Viestenz of Greenfield for twenty five years of pastoral service. The event featured sermons in German and English, speeches, and gifts from multiple congregations including a purse of twenty dollars, a rocker, and a sectional book case. Local and out of town attendees gathered after a dinner to celebrate his ministry and marriage to Mrs. August Zauft decades earlier. The Zaufts later hosted friends at their Greenfield home enjoying the holiday mood and reflections on Viestenz’s career.

Miss Genevieve Mills Leaves Estate To State Society

Miss Genevieve Mills buried at Madison bequeaths half interest in her Monona Avenue homestead to the State Historical Society. Sister-in-law Mrs Arthur C Mills to reside there for life. Upon her death the half interest passes to the society. Estate valued at 83500 with 65000 personal property and 18500 real estate. Residue left to Simeon Mills Hayes of Lincoln Nebraska.

Fire Losses and Fire Runs in Baraboo City Year Past

Baraboo fire records show the year’s total losses at 2872.62 dollars with several calls including A L Ladd residence 324 Quarry street and Congregational church at Broadway and Sixth avenue. The greatest loss occurred at the A L Ladd residence.

Baraboo May Use Warner Bequest For Macadam Highway

Wisconsin Attorney General opinion says Baraboo and Sauk County may raise and spend 5000 to meet conditions of W W Warner bequest. If Madison rejects 40000 grant for Baraboo highway from Baraboo city to Denim Lake, 5000 is allotted for trees sidewalks and related improvements.

Mattke Golden Jubilee Celebrated by Portage Family

Mr and Mrs Gustav Mattke marked fifty years of marriage on New Year’s Day 1917. About 32 relatives and friends attended a 6 o'clock dinner at their Portage home. Mr Mattke, a carpenter and contractor, has lived in Portage over fifty years with four surviving children Otto Paul Agnes and Martha.

Missionary Conference Closes At First M E Church

Memorial Offered by Hon John J Esch

Hon John J Esch offers a substantial memorial from the children of the late Rev Henry Esch to the Emanuel Evangelical church in Baraboo. The building board and pastor will position the memorial in the center front window once plans are matured. The congregation approved the gift and will finalize inscription and arrangements.

Devils Lake Park Development and Road Plans Expanded

Farmers & Merchants Bank Planned for Baraboo

The Baraboo community approves a new Farmers & Merchants Bank with $50 000 capital and $10 000 surplus led by incorporators Wilbur Cahoon Arthur Judevine Fred Schultz Daniel Ruggles and Wm H Carlisch. Rumors name George Astle as president and N C Gerber of Lancaster as cashier. The bank will occupy the Ruggles Evenson law offices at Oak and Fourth streets after remodeling. operations start once organization completes.
