Fine cattle sold at show in Chicago
George Carpenter reports that his and his son’s fine Short horns placed in the winning field at a major show in Chicago. He notes the cattle were not in peak condition but the results were gratifying. Two animals sold high with prices of 2700 and 1550 dollars, and a half interest in another brought 2000 dollars. Carpenter & Carpenter retain part ownership in the latter animal.

Two Men Die in Work Train Accident Near Cottage Grove
William Freudenberg a 24 year old farmer from Cottage Grove was killed when the work train severed his head near Madison. His companion John Nyl a 50 year old section hand from Cottage Grove was ground to death under the locomotive wheels after being dragged two miles. Louis Nyl 18 a third party escaped with injuries. The trio had left the station and walked along the track in a cold wind while the train departed unseen.

A Russian Jew, an Austrian, and an Austrian “jeweler” conned him with a fake weighing and testing. Bethge reports the details to police who search for the three described men. The scheme began with friendly chats and a promise to buy scrap gold at a sacrifice.
