County Board Names Treasurer On Fifth Vote

The county board elected E. M. Doll of Prairie du Sac to fill the county treasurer term, succeeding the late J. H. Mastin. Doll led a field of about a dozen candidates after votes from five ballots, with Griggs and Cobleigh following in the final tallies. An ordinance set traffic rules for county roads including age limits, intoxication ban, and speed limits in villages and cemeteries.

Road ordinance details and enforcement actions and a machine purchase

The ordinance sets vehicle speed to ten miles per hour for single tracks and four feet distance for multiple tracks, requires lights within half an hour after sunset and before sunrise, lists exemptions, fines from five to one hundred dollars payable to the county treasurer, and outlines court procedures and appeals. The board plans to purchase a motorcycle to aid enforcement. J T Donaghey of the state highway commission attended and explained the new road law.

Real Winnebago Indians to Perform at Portage Pageant

About a dozen Winnebago Indians will take part in Portage pageant scenes depicting early Portage at the Columbia county fair. Redmen and their squaws will wear war paint and original costumes while rehearsals continue at the fair grounds. Auto parties from nearby towns are being organized to attend the three night event next week.

Plaintiff Sues Doctor for Six Thousand Damages

Mrs. Albertine Finke of Vermont Dane county files a circuit court suit against Dr. C Hess seeking 6000 dollars alleging paralysis and deformity on the left side of her face following an operation behind the ear. Hess is a well known Baraboo physician.

Strange Court Case Over Youth Marriage Consent

A young man lacking parental consent seeks marriage to a young woman in Justice Halsted's court. Law divides on whether he may wed or face detention, as a deputized citizen tries to return the youth home for parental decision.

W. C. T. U. Meeting Plans Comfort Bags Program

The Baraboo W. C. T. U. met with Mrs. George Hughes to conduct a business session followed by music and readings. A committee was formed to prepare one hundred comfort bags for local boys and to arrange another meeting at Mrs. L. H. Palmer's home, 210 Second Avenue.

Honor Roll for Those to Appear for Next Examination

The Sauk County Exemption board lists names for the next draft call from 356 to 566 inclusive. Readiness is set for 8:00 AM on August 22, 1917, with numerous residents from Baraboo, Reedsburg, Plain, Spring Green, Loganville, and other towns required to report. the lists are signed by William Welk, chairman and F. A. Cooper, clerk.

Gollmar Circus in Portage Set for August 30

Advertising cars for Gollmar Bros and Patterson United Shows arrived in Portage announcing two performances at the fair grounds on August 30. The unified show features Patterson trained animals and three rings with a central stage. The Gollmars, from Baraboo, have visited Portage before, promoting “The Show You Know.”

Funds for road work pour in to Devils Lake route

Subscriptions to repair the road to the north end of Devils Lake are coming in nicely and work is already underway. More funds mean more repairs on the heavily used highway with immediate results promised to contributors.

Mrs. William Cone of Delton underwent an operation at the Bara Boo hospital. Eight patients are staying in the institution.

Pleasant afternoon for Reedsburg Ladies

The Ladies Aid society and Sunday school of the M E church in Reedsburg held a pleasant afternoon and picnic supper at Pine Grove. Visitors enjoyed the popular summer resort, with Mrs A F Taylor welcoming all. The lake, fed by a flowing well, offers bathing and good fishing, and the cottages overlook the lake.

Local draft board announces first call for 171 men with about fifty to depart in September. A larger group will follow as needed, listing 68 named registrants from Baraboo La Valle Reedsburg Prairie du Sac and nearby towns for initial examination and assignment.

Herman Schlumberger a grocery clerk at the New Store in Reedsburg broke bones in his wrist while cranking a Ford automobile on Wednesday afternoon. He was taken for medical treatment.

Madison youths craft pillows for soldiers

The Madison Christian Endeavor society of several churches makes khaki pillows for soldiers. The group includes First Congregational, Baptist, Pilgrim, Presbyterian and Plymouth churches. Pillows may be filled with straw, hay, or leaves and are produced each Tuesday evening.
