City Solons Hold Meeting In City Hall
City council met in city hall with Mayor Adolph Andro presiding. Aldermen Judevine and Okern were absent. A petition from road workers for higher wages was referred to the finance committee. A 15000 loan from the school fund was authorized and the money to be repaid by October 15. Four thousand eight hundred dollars from the city fund was allotted to the water fund for wells improvements. Numerous small payments to contractors suppliers and services were approved or referred.

Four hundred hogs from the John Schroeder Lumber company of Ashland are fattening on acorns dropped by trees on Oak Island in the Apostle Islands. The island hosts winter lumber camps and has long supplied fresh meat from hogs allowed to roam and forage on the island.

Army Flyers Seek Altitude Record Parachute Jump
Sergeants Strong B. Mah an and Ralph Bottreil attempted to break the world altitude record at Mc Cookfield Dayton Ohio. Bottrell's parachute opened prematurely causing injuries but a safe landing followed. Madan guided a rudderless craft from 20 600 feet to a controlled glide and a flawless landing.

Drought Hits Wisconsin Crops In July Report
The August report from Wisconsin cooperative crop reporting shows a drought driven drop in corn by 3,000,000 bushels and potatoes by 500,099 bushels. Spring wheat and tame hay fell, while tobacco oats barley and winter wheat rose. Potatoes suffer from leaf-hoppers. tobacco remains short but thrifty, Dane county shows decline. sugar beets near normal at 89 percent August 1 versus 88 July 1 and 10 year average 88.

Couple Drown at Kilbourn Dells in Wisconsin River
Mr and Mrs H Frary of Meisson drowned Sunday afternoon in the Wisconsin river near the old Dell house while swimming. Mrs Frary went beyond her depth and her husband, attempting to rescue her, was claimed by the water. The bodies were recovered today by dragging. Prof Frary, assistant professor of steam and gas engineering at Madison, had been appointed to that position in 1919.

Milwaukee Man Slashes Throat During Arrest Attempt
Chesley Morgan of Milwaukee slashed his throat with a razor in his home while officers prepared to arrest him on a wife assault charge. He was taken to emergency hospital with fatal injuries. The warrant had been issued by the district attorney's office and officers Dax and Dietz served the summons.

Lightning Fatal to Valuable Percheron Horse
Sam Lowry of Vernon was hauling hay when a storm struck and his team became stuck. A bolt killed one horse instantly while the other was knocked unconscious and dragged five miles before recovery. The surviving Percheron is expected to live. the loss ends a prized county show pair.

A 25 year old man, son of Mr and Mrs Took asuistle of Lodi and Arlington, went swimming in Lake Wisconsin near Merrimack. He disappeared after diving in about 2 30 pm and was believed to drown in twelve feet of water. Rescue efforts with fish poles continued as the body had not yet been recovered.

Directors of the Brazilian Lloyds approve plans to establish three steamship lines between United States ports and South America. Missionary Festival Held at Greenfield Church Farm
The Christ Lutheran church Greenfield held a missionary festival at Herman Schubring’s farm with morning services by Rev Schmeling Sparta and an afternoon lecture on Greenland by Rev Brandt Neillsville. Attendance extended from Greenfield Merrimack Caledonia and Baraboo with visitors including Rev Freund North Freedom and Dr Ladewig Baraboo. Ice cream and pop were sold and a donation was raised for missionary work.
