Northwest farmers predict 170 loaves per person from 1916 wheat

The Northwest expects a record spring wheat crop with 315 million bushels, enough to bake 170 billion pounds of flour and 170 loaves per person in the United States. North Dakota leads with about 125 million bushels, Minnesota and South Dakota around 60 million each, and Montana near 50 million. W O Mieit of the Baker Brick Company reports a fine quality brick clay bed about three miles north of Baker. Samples tested show a light grey brick that could make a handsome product. The bed covers several acres and can be mined easily.

Seattle labor leader arrested in sedition draft case

Hulet M. Wells a Seattle city employee and former Seattle labor council president was arrested by United States Secret Service on charges of seditious conspiracy tied to allegedly distributing literature urging forceful resistance to the government and the draft. Tornado Sweeps Charleston Mattoon and Illinois Towns

Tornadoes across Illinois on Saturday caused massive destruction and loss of life. Mattoon reports about 70 killed and 300 injured as the business district is wrecked and 2,000 residents are homeless. Charleston and other towns report up to 250 dead and extensive damage. George Kellar living near Baker reportedly died from drinking poisoned water as strychnine was placed in a barrel by a neighbor. Mrs Kellar and the daughter’s husband were also poisoned and seriously ill. A suspect is said to have threatened Mr Kellar and details are scarce due to remote location. Goethals Patches Up Differences Over Fleet Campaign

Washington May 28 Differences between Chairman Denman of the shipping board and Major General Goethals over the boards wooden ship building campaign have been cleared away. The fleet corporation will proceed with construction of both steel and wooden ships. Goethals announced contracts for 24 more wooden ships and six steel barges. Goethals will be given free rein and ship building placed entirely in his hands with the board handling its other functions. The operation of the fleet will be in the hands of the board. Congress sent to conference an amendment to the 750 million ship construction appropriation eliminating a senate provision directing the president to supervise the fleet corporation's general manager.
