Grant’s Bold James River Crossing Missed Confederate Opportunity
Grant planned a hidden crossing at Wilcox’s Landing to strike Petersburg from the rear, risking a difficult transport feat and forcing Lee’s flank. For three days, June 15–17, Grant’s army arrived and pressed Petersburg while Lee’s forces waited, nearly sealing a decisive Confederate chance. The strategy credit goes to Grant with possible input from Humphreys. Alexander is noted in one account.
