Sailor recounts surprise and shudder etiquette tale
The excerpt presents a rambling dialogue about a sailor’s punchy exchange and a mock etiquette of shudder length, followed by a lawyer anecdote from the Kansas City Times and a 18th century note on snow to rain conversion by Alexander Brice. It includes scattered references to a New Orleans Times-Democrat clipping and a London Chronicle quotation.

The Adder Size and Misconceptions
The adder grows up to two feet long with a thick midsection and sluggish movements. The claim that its head transfers between ends every six months is superstition. Its tail is stumpy and resembles the head, making it hard to tell apart from a distance.
Courtesy and manners in a parlour farce
The scene presents a titled patron complaining about table manners to a new butler who refuses to voice opinions about his predecessor. The exchange emphasizes professional courtesy and deference, with wordplay and comic mispronunciations. Nearby, a Prudence quip and a dentist pun add humor to a collage of witty snippets.

Woman Reporter’s Visit to Stevenson in San Francisco
A veteran journalist on a California trip visits Robert Louis Stevenson in his San Francisco home. He is pale and frail in bed as she asks for a brief interview, then begins knitting needles in hand while she reads the clock and the interview ends. Comments note lingering New England strawberry shortcake jokes amid moralizing critiques.
