Washington New York Sept. 8 William Nathaniel Roach who was U S senator from North Dakota 1893 1899 died here after ten months in bed under special treatment He was born Sept 26 1849 in Washington Georgetown educated at Georgetown University and served as a Civil War quartermaster clerk He moved to Dakota territory in 1879 and ran mail routes He governed Larimore as mayor 1883 1887 and twice sought the governorship He married twice with first wife dying in 1855 and later Mrs Alexander Pallock of Salt Lake City Funeral plans include a solemn requiem at St Ignatius church and interment in Washington.

A violent confrontation ten miles east of Durant Oklahoma involved Rev W F Whaley and his sons Alfred and Ernest against J H Richardson his brother in law Waltenberger and J A Richardson. Elder Whaley was killed Alfred severely wounded and J A Richardson thigh flesh wound. Longstanding feuds between the two families preceded the attack.
In Boston a powder magazine at Old Fort Winthrop on Governor's Island exploded, likely due to fires started by boys. One man, Cotter, died and five were injured, with possible additional casualties. About six tons of gunpowder stored in a granite casemate detonated, while other casemates nearby remained empty. Initial theories of external fire were ruled out, leaving the cause unexplained.
During a gale on Gull lake a steel rowboat carrying A. Miller of Battle Creek and Herman Breuer and Henry Breuer of Yorkville capsized. All three men drowned.

Chicago, Sept. William J Bartholin accused of murdering his mother Annie Bartholin and his fiancée Minnie Mitchell. The bodies were found in Chicago and near Riceville. A suicide note in Bartholin’s coat claimed two women were killed and identified the writer. The body of Bartholin was found near Riceville.
Thomas Burke is found dead with his head severed and his wife badly wounded in a midnight attack by Mattieo Alexander a trusted menial. The assailant fled after slashing Burke and injuring Mrs Burke while their 13 year old daughter slept nearby. Police seek Alexander who was employed at the home.
On a passenger train near Osceola Arkansas two white men and a man identified as Baldy Taylor fired on a black traveler after he boarded the wrong car. H. G. Fisher and R. Hume were mortally wounded, E. W. Schulte severely hurt, and Taylor was captured amid reports of a forming mob.
The Bridgetown smallpox outbreak led to a Aug 25 riot where about 500 people blocked removal of a patient. Police were attacked and several injured, the riot act read, many arrests made. A warship was sent from Kingston as Bridgetown reported rising cases.
Toledo, September 8. A wife's intervention stopped Louis Quinn from being shot by his brother in law E G Dills at Whitmore. Quinn confronted Dills in his store over a letter about his Sandusky county auditor candidacy. Dills shot Quinn in the head. the wife intervened and prevented further shooting. Quinn's condition is critical. Dills is under arrest.
