Reports mention a brick bridge and ties to Xavier. Bonilla leaves New Orleans for Belize announcing retirement from politics.
Misa Saula Glaser and Ralph C Herz were in New York Thursday. Dr Maurice F Kean accepts post as minister to Denmark offered by President Roosevelt. Royal Arcanum installation closes its thirteenth Boston session. Mila Farman Pratt dies at sixty four. former Wide Awake editor. A nurse abducts a four days-old infant in Minneapolis case. Henry Becker, 21, arrested on suspicion of murdering Ametia Statel in Pickhurst farm area. Proverb notes patience is ten years worth of comfort.
Canton Ohio May 24 Doctors Portman Eyeman and Rixey report Mrs William McKinley beyond recovery from apoplexy with life limited to days. She lies comatose as sisters and telegrams reveal nationwide sorrow and sleep brought by her long frail health and recent knitting at home.
Independent Bartles Oil Charles W Ralph Penn Oil and Supply John H Hull file formal complaint under the Hinton law with Secretary of State Julius A Schmahl alleging price discrimination by Standard Oil on May 13 to drive competitors from Minnesota. Complaint sent to the attorney general for action.
In Mexico City on May 24 six people were killed and seven injured by collapsing structures. Two children were buried under ruins on Constancia street while a building under construction on Abine street killed four workmen and left seven injured. All victims were from poorer classes.
In San Francisco on May 24 the public utilities committee debated voiding the United Railroads franchise. President Patrick Calhoun clashed with E. P. B. Troy who called him a liar. Calhoun struck Troy, Boxton ordered him removed, and Troy accused Boxton of taking bribe money.
An ammonia pipe explosion at Armour & Co. beef packing plant in Chicago's stock yards killed five workers and seriously injured about a dozen others. The building was crowded. fumes overwhelmed many, and six hours passed before the first body was recovered. All victims and most injured were foreigners.
The Chippewa Falls convention of tramps featured speeches praising President Roosevelt and Senator La Follette and endorsing Senator Foraker for president. Police dismissed the delegates at the end. A popular resolution condemned police methods in large cities and many speakers attacked the existing social order.
The Minnesota Supreme Court denied Dr T E W Appleby a rehearing of the suit challenging the will of his wife Cornelia Day Wilder Appleby. Three wills were upheld, ending state court litigation involving at least 2.5 million dollars for the Amherst H Wilder charity to aid the worthy poor of St Paul. A federal case by California relatives may be dropped following the state ruling.
In Helsingfors on May 24 the first single chamber diet under the new constitution elected presiding officers and adjourned for imperial confirmation. The Socialist and Young Finn coalition held 184 of 200 votes, choosing Judge Svinhuivud as president. Doctor Al Ursin and Baron Palseen were named vice presidents. All officers are Swedish nobility and Ursin is noted as a Socialist leader from a famed old family.
At Buffalo on May 24 the strike of inside freight handlers near the docks ended as Western Transit raised the hourly rate to 23 cents from 20 cents, meeting the workers demand.
A May 24 report from Janesville Wisconsin says a lightning strike destroyed about $10 000 of property on the McDonald farm near the city including four high quality horses forty sheep barns and farm implements.
Mohrstadt aged seventy three a Civil War veteran and former business manager of the St Louis Anzieger for twenty five years died by self inflicted gunshot. He had suffered from impaired speech for some time.
The St. Louis temperature reached 84 degrees on May 24. Two men were sunstruck. one likely will not recover.
