Report from London and Athens recounts Edhem Pasha’s forces driving Greek troops from Domokos and advancing toward the Okhrys range. Dispatches warn of a serious Greek defeat with Smolenski at risk of isolation and Greece’s position endangered as powers debate intervention. The Athens crowd reacts with shock.
London reports the Athens fighting between Turkish and Greek forces near Domokos. Tens of thousands engaged as Turks attacked in waves, but Greek artillery and reserves stabilized the line though gains were made on the right before a retreat to Bous.
The Turks fielded 40,000 troops with 40,000 reserves while our force numbered 35,000. We suffered heavy losses, but the enemy also took thousands of casualties.
The proposed terms of peace with Greece are mocked in parliamentary lobbies. Indemnity of five to six million pounds and a minor frontier rectification are viewed as the likely final settlement, while retrocession of Thessaly is deemed impracticable.
In Constantinople on May 18 representatives of the powers met and prepared a note to Turkey requesting an armistice and asserting Greece should not be crushed. They doubt Europe can compel Turkey to withdraw from Thessaly if Crete remains in Greek hands, and stress opposition to abandoning Thessaly.
In Athens on May 18 ministers gathered at the ministry of marine after receiving front line dispatches. Justice Minister M. Triauta filaca announced the gravity of the situation as General Mavromichalis suffered a severe leg wound and relinquished command to a fellow officer.
Sr PrereRSBURG May 18 The city papers protest against the excessive and unacceptable terms Turkey seeks for peace with Greece. They warn Europe may abandon mediation if Turkey stands firm. Novoe Vremya says powers must act to guard Greece from threats to its national existence.
Governor of Janina reports Osman Pasha’s division fought two days before Arta against Greek forces and inflicted heavy losses. The Turkish unit seized the positions they had occupied after the engagement.
London on May 18 reports Turkish peace demands viewed as exorbitant causing widespread stock declines across all departments. Fear of serious political complications unsettles markets and dampens investor confidence.
Albert Scheffer, president of the Allemannia Bank, is indicted for grand larceny over a personal overdraft of 6475. A longtime Northwest Republican leader, he appeared before Judge Lewis and was released on $8,000 bail as the bank seeks reorganization after failing amid winter bank closures.
Milwaukee May 18 The body of William Pautz known as Pouch who killed Farmer Harris and wounded others was found in Hale’s pond at Prospect Hill. He apparently shot himself after entering the water. His bicycle irons were recovered from his pocket.
In New York 18,000 tailors and helpers are on strike with 10,000 in the city as 1,000 East Side shops close. William Cohen says the stoppage spans Brooklyn and Newark and stems from contractors not honoring the agreement, affecting the clothing trade nationwide.
The final report by W. E. Blake, receiver for the Burlington Insurance Company, discloses creditors will recover about 20 percent of amounts owed. Attorneys for several creditors oppose the discharge, claiming $170,899 is unaccounted for, and Thomas G. Miller, former RP company president, has been summoned to explain the missing funds.
Havana reports that the royal decree implementing December reforms will be in Santa Clara Matanzas Havana and Pinar del Rio provinces. El Pais and other dailies congratulate the queen regent on the event which coincides with Alfonso XIII’s birthday.
A Wisconsin farmer and his wife left their home to tend stray stock and forest flames swept the farm. The house burned and three small children left alone perished in Shawnee on May 18 near Gresham.
The fourth annual joint debate at Iowa City debated direct popular election of U.S. Senators. Iowa speakers A. W. Hamann E. G. Moon and F. W. Beckman supported the affirmative. Minnesota speakers Bert Russell R. W. Nelson and W. D. Lane opposed. The judges ruled unanimously for the affirmative.
May 18 report says Friends of the Cuban belligerency resolution press for a Senate vote before the tariff bill is taken up next Monday. Senator Morgan hopes for a vote this week, while Senator Mason warns that blocking a vote could derail Monday’s tariff consideration. He urges Cuba action before tariff discussion to avoid filibusters.

E. R. Chapman is held in the District jail for 25 days after surrendering to United States Marshal Wilson at 4 o clock under an earlier agreement.
About 150 delegates representing over 50 900 iron and steel workers gather in Detroit for the Amalgamated Association of Iron and Steel Workers annual convention. They will work for several days to arrange the wage schedule.

Montevideo May 18 reports a six hour clash between Uruguayan troops and insurgents under Lamas and Sarsieva. Government forces claim victory and say the revolution is dying out due to ammunition shortages and desertions. Later official word states insurgents fully routed and the revolt ended.
Ottawa announces use of crime code amendment to bar exhibition of prize fight pictures. Minister of justice Sir Oliver Mowatt drafts a measure making public display of prize fight images a misdemeanor with severe penalties across Canada.
A group of silver Republicans from the senate and house gathered at Senator Pettigrew’s home on May 18 to endorse a proposal for an export bounty on agricultural products. They argue the bounty is needed to help farmers offset import duties on other goods.
