A catastrophic fire and naphtha explosion at Sheraden Panhandle railroad yards near Pittsburgh injure about 200, with a score of deaths and extensive property damage. Flames reach 60 feet as escaped fuel ignites lights, with echoes of the event drawing a large crowd from nearby areas.
A rail yard disaster in Sheraden near Corks Run involved 10 tank cars carrying petroleum and naphtha. A broken naphtha car sparked fires, followed by two more explosions that sent flames over hundreds of spectators and left several injured or dead.
Surgeons rushed to the scene and treated the injured for hours after a disaster affecting Pittsburg and Allegheny. Care extended late into the night as responders labored to alleviate suffering and provide aid after midnight.
In Minneapolis at 6 15 p m commercial traveler J W Voight shot May Woetch at the Parker House then killed himself. Voight 33 left a widow and family in Chaents live at Plaine Minn. May Welch 24 who used the name Ruth Welch died en route to hospital. The motive remains a mystery.
In Lewiston Idaho on May 13 a spectator in Oro Fino reports the double suicide of Dr. E. J. Leadbrooke a married wealthy physician and Miss Winnie Booth a Moscow church helper and school teacher. They used morphine by hypodermic injection. Leadbrooke was the Booth family physician and had moved from Minnesota a year earlier.
The British parliamentary secretary for the foreign office instructed Ambassador Lord Pauncefote to renew protests about United Kingdom discrimination in duties on paintings. London says Britain deserves the same 5 percent duty remission granted to France Germany Portugal and Italy by the United States.
Milwaukee hod carriers on city buildings walked off the job demanding a 5 cent per hour raise from 26 cents hourly. The action affected erection work across Milwaukee as the strike began today.
In American Association Milwaukee beat Toledo 4 0 and Kansas City defeated Columbus 11 1. American League Baltimore defeated Washington 9 4 Detroit beat Chicago 5 4 Philadelphia lost to Boston 2 8 Cleveland edged St Louis 2 1. National League Pittsburg beat Boston 4 2 St Louis defeated New York 2 1 Chicago lost 0 2 to Brooklyn Cincinnati lost 5 8 at Philadelphia 8.
Minneapolis report records May wheat at 7644c for May delivery. July at 76% and September at 73% cents. On Track No 1 hard at 79%c, No 1 Northern at 77 and 77%c, No 2 Northern at 75% and 76%c.
Sioux City la May 12 cattle beeves 5.00 to 6.50, cows bulls and mixed 3.00 to 5.25, stockers and feeders 3.75 to 4.60, calves and yearlings 2.75 to 4.40. Hogs 6.75 to 7.10.
About 145,000 miners across Pennsylvania's anthracite fields began a wage and hour strike. No mines operated as 357 collieries paused with expectations of a permanent walkout after Hazleton convention. Companies prepared for disruption and sought to manage shortages while President Mitchell coordinated district leaders.

Three hundred fifty laborers from the People's Gaslight and Coke and Ogden Gas companies walked out at midnight protesting discharge of union members. Strikers say no gas will be produced, risking city darkness until a settlement is reached.
In Washington on May 13 Senator Foraker of Ohio urged the United States must retain control over the Philippines until order and a stable government are established. He praised the army and criticized critics, saying American policy aligns with President McKinley’s instructions and that the minority attacked the army. The Senate backed the House amendment for a $200,000 appropriation related to the French West Indies project.
Washington May 13 An overwhelming vote approved 200000 for West Indies relief after a Senate message from the president described the calamity and urged aid. The appropriation faced brief debate as large private contributions reduced the request. 198 to 9 passed with the District of Columbia business following.
A May report from Fort Meade South Dakota notes eight soldiers deserted since Friday and twenty in two months from one cavalry troop. Orders have been issued to arrest all absentees.
