The long running miners dispute nears a strike as talks on arbitration stall. National figures Mitchell and Hanna weigh in while operators delay response. If no concession is granted, the miners, led by Nicolls and the First district, plan to strike, with broad opposition to delay.
In Washington on May 9 the House continued the bill to add three stars to the American flag. A 65 minute rule allowed amendments. McRae’s Oklahoma and Indian Territory consolidation failed 57 to 108. Overstreet’s Arizona and New Mexico plan to form Montezuma state remained pending. An amendment against polygamy passed. A resolution mourned Rear Admiral Sampson and a seven member committee was formed to attend his funeral.
In Dubuque Iowa on May 9 three firemen died when a wall at the Iowa iron works collapsed while they were battling the blaze. Frank Ganahl 35 captain of the chemical company John Fitzpatrick 38 truckman Charles Wise 25 truckman died. John McPoland was severely injured with both legs broken. Financial loss estimated at 15000 dollars.
Rome May 9 Brazil agrees to prolong the commercial treaty with Italy until December 31. The prior denunciation followed Italy's refusal to admit coffee free of duty.
Washington reports from General Chaffee relay Brigadier Davis on May 6 noting a satisfactory situation in Mindanao with no hostile fire since prisoners escaped. Moros could easily attack shore lines but are not. 25 prisoners may have escaped with 10 recaptured. Datto Paygong slain at fort. Datto from Bayan fort seeks peace with cattle and supplies promised.
The 86th annual report says threats to support were halted. Receipts totaled 433173 with a 29329 cash balance. Foreign work is funded to 200000. invested funds reach 486402 yielding 19595 this year. Bible distribution rose to 1723791, up 169663, with 686755 in the U S and 1037036 abroad.
The Record-Herald reports plans for a daily Pennsylvania train to cover the Chicago New York distance of 1125 miles in about 17 hours. Exact start date not settled but the new service is to be launched soon.
In Bloomington Illinois the northeast cell block of the state reformatory at Pontiac burned causing 200000 dollars in damage. Three hundred inmates were confined but moved quickly to the south block. The blaze origin is charged to inmates who exploited absence of Superintendent Mallory and officials in Springfield.
Colon, Colombia May 9 reports government gunboats with Generals Castro and Jefferies aboard departed Panama last Monday for a coast cruise. An engagement with insurgent vessels is expected momentarily. The isthmus situation remains unchanged with large government forces at both locations.
Watertown reports Lieutenant Governor Jesse Stone growing weaker daily as physicians say there is no hope for recovery. He takes little food, and his vitality alone sustains him for a short time before the disease overcomes him.
Attorney General Knox completes revision of the bill of complaint prepared by United States Attorney Bethea and forwards it to Chicago to be filed in the circuit court for the Northern district of Illinois.

Capital stock set at 1 million dollars led by Clement Studebaker William P Williams Howard H Gross and others. Dr A H Doty in New York outlines renewed mosquito control efforts with quarantine lab experiments planned for Staten Island pools and ponds.
A telegram to the Moulders' union head says the national executive board has declared a lockout for the Union Pacific foundry and instructs all union moulders nationwide not to work on castings for the company.
