A local advertisement touts a sweeping sale featuring spring dry goods lace shade and tapestry curtains oil cloth table linens muslin underwear hosiery and more. The message urges customers to come early as the store promises to fulfill its grand sale and even do more led by R R Murphy of Austin Minnesota.
Seven young Sunday school members from Toledo city lose their lives when a naphtha launch Frolic is struck by the tug Arthur Woods of the Great Lakes Towing fleet near Ironville. Joseph Hepburn owns the launch. three survivors report the other details and the crewmembers are missing in the river.
Lieutenant H. E. King is reported fatally injured in Evanston Illinois after an assault on May 8. Details remain sparse but the incident involves an Army officer and a possible battle or scuffle near the town. Authorities are investigating as the condition screens in and out.
H. King of the Twentieth Infantry at Fort Sheridan was found badly beaten on the steps of J. M. Melville at 1030 Greenwood Avenue Evanston. Deserter suspects pursued by a lieutenant, King lies unconscious with severe head injuries and internal damage, likely to cause death.
In Atlanta on May 8 Victor Nutall aged 11 was arrested for murder after the death of 6 year old Collin McDougall blamed on sewer gas. Nutall and two companions allegedly forced the child into a street sewer and gagged him to inhale gas until convulsions caused death.
Des Moines reports a tank car filled with oil broke down on the Chicago Great Western at Talmage. Conductor George Miller of St. Joseph was killed. The tank car fell from the 150 foot Grand river bridge, dragging three cars including the caboose and igniting the oil.
Five men died in Floyd county in a confrontation with Con stable Reedy and a posse following the murder of Sol Osborne and Bud Little two weeks earlier. Names identified include James Tompkins and Walter Jones. three others are unnamed. The reports say the deadly encounter occurred as the men resisted capture.
Milwaukee reports that major US brewers debated a 40 cent per barrel price rise at a recent Milwaukee Brewers' Association meeting. Two delegates were appointed to attend the forthcoming national convention to discuss pricing.
An inquest in Faulkton South Dakota on May 8 concluded Edward Coleman died from a gunshot fired from behind. The post mortem showed the bullet struck from back, killing instantly. Joseph P. Coleman was arrested on first degree murder charges.
George H Peters and John Graham were arrested by city detectives in New York on May 8. Peters faces charges of stealing the original Holland submarine boat plans and Graham is accused of attempting to sell them. Peters, formerly a stenographer at Holland Torpedo Boat and Union Iron Works in San Francisco, allegedly took the blueprints on April 18 after leaving San Francisco. The plans had been in Navy officials hands at Washington and were returned to San Francisco when Peters allegedly obtained them.
The speaker urged forming an international safety association with global directors uniting in the movement and recommended pressing Congress to create a national bureau of identification.
The National Federation of Women’s Clubs in Los Angeles has finalized its ticket for the upcoming vote. The slate lists Dimies T. S. Denison of New York as president, Robert Burdette of California as first vice president, Emma Fox of Michigan as second vice president, William F. Coad of South Dakota as recording secretary, Louise Pappenheim of South Carolina as corresponding secretary, Emma Van Vechten of Iowa as treasurer, and Noyes of Wisconsin as auditor.
Chicago May 8 official announcement states the Chicago Great Western will extend its lines to St Louis. A syndicate has been organized to provide capital for the extension led by John W Gates as a prominent underwriter. The company plans a first mortgage lien on the new line with bonds sold at about 90, the discount to par filling via common stock.
The Record-Herald reports Rock Island officials negotiating to buy a majority of Chicago St. Louis and Peoria stock to form the southern segment of a new St Louis Chicago line, creating through routes from St Louis to St Paul and Minneapolis.
At the ninth annual convention in Louisville Harvey O. Carr reported as treasurer and President Sylvester delivered the address urging police chiefs to take steps to stamp out anarchy.
Richmond reporting indicates a deadly blaze at the Burns University school near Charlottesville Virginia fatally burning two students. The victims are J. C. Knox of Richmond and Agnew M. Neal of Albemarle whose charred bodies were found in their rooms. The fire’s origin remains unknown.
In New York on May 8 the Rev. Dr. Ferranti Italian secretary to Archbishop Corrigan released a cable from Rome via Campanella, stating Pope Leo XIII’s sorrow at the death of Archbishop Corrigan.
A snow storm struck Southern Germany on May 8 reducing temperatures and burying blooming orchards under about a foot of snow. The unusually cold weather continued, causing damage to crops and concerns for growers.
Nationalist MPs tried to censure Speaker William Court Gully over John Dillon’s one week suspension for parliamentary language aimed at Joseph Chamberlain. J J Mooney’s motion failed 328 to 228 as Conservatives and Liberals backed the chair’s authority.
The Northwestern Telephone Exchange Company announces millions invested to expand toll lines throughout the Northwest. The system includes over one hundred independent company connections and a service claimed unequalled in the country with 30,000 subscribers and 2,000 toll stations.
In Washington on May 8 the Philippine bill debate turned heated when Senator McComas cited Civil War cruelties. Senator Tillman of South Carolina responded with a brutal denunciation of negroes and asserted whites fought to subdue them by any means. Senator Burton challenged Tillman and praised General Funston amid a Philippines policy clash.
Washington May 8 Secretary Root states no new orders have been sent to General Smith or other officers regarding operations in Samar. He confirms only General Order No 100 of 1863 governs conduct of armies in the field and follows those directives. Washington will not interfere with frontline military decisions.
The House began debate on a bill to let Oklahoma Arizona and New Mexico draft constitutions form state governments and enter the Union on equal footing with existing states. Knox and New Mexico's Rodney spoke in support while an Arkansas member proposed merging Oklahoma and Indian Territory as one state. The House adopted the conference report on the Indian appropriation bill and a Senate amendment to open Uintah Reservation faced a strong counter effort.
Bishop Henry C. Potter of the Episcopal Diocese of New York became suddenly ill during the day though officials say the condition is not alarming.
About 6 000 miners from 10 Webster Coal and Coke mines in Johnstown Pa approve a mass meeting strike until the company signs the Altoona mining scale, adopted by the joint convention in Altoona in March and followed by neighboring operators.
Chicago report states machinists on the Grand Trunk road have voted to seek a 12 per cent wage increase. A union committee will present the amended scale to system managers for approval.
In Cleveland a May S A conference failed to settle the tugmen's strike. The dispute widened as Great Lakes Towing workers from Duluth to Buffalo are to be called out. Tugmen demanded every second night and every second Sunday off at full pay, a privilege to apply only in Cleveland.
Hoisting engineers of the American Copper company mines call off their strike after failing to win support from the Silver Bow trades and labor assembly. The 28 strikers demanded higher wages, were refused, and left, halting nine major copper mines and affecting several thousand workers.
In New York on May 8 there were no new developments about the three firms that suspended Mcucay following a major Webb-Meyer syndicate break. Assignees continued examining the books of Lockwood Hurd & Co and Henry Bros & Co with schedules of liabilities and assets likely to be filed by next week.
Postmaster General Payne will appeal the District supreme court decision that admitted certain publications to the second class mail rate. The case will likely reach the supreme court of appeals and, if needed, the United States supreme court.
