In St Paul the Minnesota Senate rejected a proposal to ask voters in 1956 whether to convene a full revision of the state constitution. The House supported shelving the measure. Gov Freeman voiced disappointment as debate concluded after five hours over three days.
Penny Rae Raymond seven was reported in satisfactory condition at University of Minnesota Hospital after a 24 hour operation to repair a heart wall hole. A human donor Ted Goodman forty one assisted by supplying blood while his heart and lungs aided Penny. The hole, about the size of a nickel, connected heart chambers.
El Paso Texas U S District Judge R E Thomason sentenced Harvey Matusow to three years in federal prison for criminal contempt of court.
Rep Charles Halsted Brainerd introduces a bill to create a separate urban road planning and construction section within the state highway department. The proposal aims to centralize urban infrastructure planning and speed project approvals.
Donald LaValley and Everett Pack, both 26, were injured when their car collided with a Great Western freight train at a Dodge Center crossing. LaValley suffered a right arm injury and is in satisfactory condition. Pack has a fractured pelvis and head injuries but was improving and in fair condition. Both men were Austin High School graduates from the class of 1946 and employed locally.
The stock market snapped back from a week of declines as the AP average rose 2.90 to 154.50, the largest one day gain since 1939. The rise erased much of Monday’s four billion dollar loss and boosted quoted securities value by about three billion on the New York Stock Exchange.
Senator Humphrey of Minnesota, chairman of a Senate Government Operations subcommittee, announced plans to investigate who oversees and coordinates the federal security program. He is considering a resolution to create a nonpartisan commission to study the program, with Civil Service Commission officials listed as witnesses.
Laborites voted 141 to 112 to withdraw the whip from Aneurin Bevan and isolate him as an independent in the Commons. Attlee led the move against Bevan’s faction after a split over party leadership and support for government treaties. The party warned to unite behind its leader while urges for early general elections continued.
Douglas Rigg, associate warden at San Quentin, will take over as warden of Minnesota’s Stillwater Prison in April. The New Orleans native and UC graduate previously led California parole and penal programs and will succeed Edwin Swenson who resigned in January.
President Eisenhower said atomic weapons could be used against strict military targets in any conflict and backed Secretary Dulles on tactical atomic uses. He warned about stock and farm price declines, praised party unity with Nixon, and said automation concerns may need study, while not committing to a guaranteed annual wage.
The Senate stock market inquiry heard warnings of a boom to doom cycle amid Wall Street optimism. J A Livingston of the Philadelphia Bulletin warned the rise risks a crash similar to 1929 while noting hearings this time aim to prevent a crash. Dorsey Richardson testified the price rise reflects real economic shifts over the past decade.
Austin High announces Thursday sales for 85 season reserve tickets at Mayo Civic Auditorium for the Region One final between defending champion Austin and Wykoff. Public sales start 4 p.m. with four ticket limit per buyer. Additional sales Friday before 10 a.m. at the High School business office. Tickets cost $1.
Jean Hersholt 68 a noted film actor and radio star departs with his wife Via for a four month European vacation. The actor known as Dr. Christian has appeared in 453 movies and has chaired the Motion Picture Relief Fund for 17 years.
The Senate 50 to 44 defeats a Democratic substitute for a tax cut aimed at low income families, while backing a House bill extending corporate and excise tax rates. The clash centers on a $20 cut for 1956 and dependent additions, with five Democrats joining 45 Republicans.
Hodges, a St Louis resident, followed a hunch and found his 1952 Plymouth among cars recovered by Tulsa police. About 200 stolen vehicles from St Louis were traced to Tulsa dealers. Hodges spent part of his vacation there reviewing recovered cars and located his own vehicle yesterday.
London residents of Mower County District 70 weighed consolidation with Austin District 27. After a Tuesday meeting 14 favored consolidation with Austin, 13 supported an associated district, one backed consolidation with Lyle. They will study the associated district plan further before state legislature action.
