Murphy's previews an array of New Press Goods New Wash goods cyberic line knit underwear Muslin underwear and summer hosiery with bells belt broaches and more. To make room for new stock the store will offer all Winter Hosiery and Underwear at 331 3 pe cent off for one week.
Indianapolis March 15 The Sentinel reports Charles L Farrell Indiana Bankers association secretary traveled to New York for talks with leading bankers on a major plan to issue uniform bank money orders. The system would use a vast New York clearinghouse with branch clearings nationwide, backing by a paid up capital in the millions. Banks would issue orders at a low rate, possibly 10 cents on $100, to compete with express firms and the government.
All customers receive tickets equal to their purchase amount. One hundred dollars in tickets entitle a free 14 by 17 inch pastel portrait of any person. The shop will photograph, produce, and deliver both the portrait and photo. Comparable portraits elsewhere cost at least 85 to 7 dollars.
Washington reports the Senate, after an executive session of about an hour, finally ratified the Hague Convention on land warfare. The debate focused on the Philippines and General Funston's Aguinaldo capture. The treaty bans dum dum bullets and prohibits treachery, perfidy, no quarter, misuse of flags of truce, and unnecessary destruction or seizure of property. It defines spies and clarifies open mission criteria.
The secretary of the treasury announced a halt to buying certain U S bonds in the present period. He cited unreasonably high prices and the goal of avoiding government market support that could hurt national bank circulation. Banks are said to retire circulation to sell bonds or secure government deposits, with the secretary favoring banks that keep circulation.
Representative Randell of Texas circulated a petition among Democratic colleagues calling for a caucus to decide the government’s stance toward the Boers. The petition names March 19 for the meeting, with signatures broadly from the Democratic side and a caucus likely to be held.
In Kansas City on March 15 a three story brick structure at 209 Main Street collapsed during demolition. Workers Ed Mange and J S Pursley were rescued 15 minutes later with bruises and bleeding but not fatally hurt. Helper Thomas Holland was injured by a falling beam while aiding the rescue.
Brigadier General Frederick Funston arrived in Washington with aide Lieutenant Mitchell for a visit to pay respects to President Roosevelt and Secretary Root. He plans to stay until next week and then travel to Oakland California to be with Mrs Funston. His Philippine leave of absence expires April 10 and is subject to possible U S assignment changes. He prefers a northern posting for about a year to recover his health.
Evansville Indiana March 15 the old Lincoln farm in Lincoln City Spencer county will be sold for delinquent taxes as no taxes have been paid. Past efforts to turn the farm into a park and seek congressional aid may follow the sale. The Lincoln cottage once stood there was moved to New York and sold for thousands. Lincoln's mother is buried on the farm.
Westbound Nickel Plate No 2 ran into an open switch near Knox Indiana on March 15. The high speed wreck tore the baggage coach apart and left the engine and six freight cars piled and on fire. Firemen and crew suffered severe injuries but no deaths reported. Traffic was blocked for hours as the blaze burned.
A Greek priest from Kenai on Cook Inlet reports a devastating eruption around January 1. An entire mountain side split open with fire and lava, Kenai village covered in ash, and an earthquake generated tidal waves causing significant damage.
The Northwestern Telephone Exchange Co expands service to over 1700 cities and towns in Minnesota Iowa Wisconsin North Dakota and South Dakota, extending reach across the upper Midwest. This nationwide growth highlights growing rural connectivity and regional telecom competition.
A retailer promotes walnut oak cherry gilt and silver frames for portraits. Mouldings 7 to 9 inches wide are priced to seem like a bargain, with frames costing more than the customer pays. Every portrait leaves the shop framed, insisted for reasons that will be explained later.
Boston labor leaders say the strike is breaking and a settlement is forming as Governor Crane reports railroads will rehire many workers and steamship crews are returning. Officials aim to resume freight traffic, with about ten percent of vacated positions filled by non unionists while independent stoppages remain possible.
Fall River March 15 The industrial dispute between manufacturers and textile unions remains unchanged as both sides stand by prior decisions. A fight between capital and labor seems likely with a public call for a compromise to avert a Monday morning clash. Sagamore mill No. 1 opened gates for possible resumption, but only about 380 workers reported, far below the workforce.
Berlin reports the foreign office denies rumors of any furlough or recall for Dr. von Holleben the German ambassador to the United States. The Associated Press correspondent in Berlin was authorized to deny the rumors.
Lexington Tennessee March 15 Dur ing a quarrel here Sam Pratt shot and killed John Linsey and Tom Hancock leaving another wounded in a deadly shooting.
March 15 in Colborne Ontario Henry B Merrick, ex pastor now with an insurance firm, announced General Methuen’s capture and predicted General Kitchener’s hanging. Caspen Wilbert confronted him, knocked Merrick down, and later was shot at while leaving Merrick’s farm. Merrick has not been seen since.
The Chinese government records a deed transferring a building site at Nineteenth and Vernon streets for a legation residence and officers in Washington. The consideration is $15,870, establishing a permanent home for the minister and staff in the northwestern city section.
Reports from the Southwest Virginia coal fields indicate little change in the situation. About 1,000 miners are out and armed guards are on the scene. The situation may become critical at any moment, with miners relying on native mountaineers for aid if needed. Operators have telegraphed for more guns and ammunition.
