Housing Bill Sidetracked in House Banking Clash

Washington House members clashed over the 1956 housing bill with Rep. Rains and Rep. Spence resisting reconsideration of the measure approved by the Banking Committee. The Rules Committee voted 6-4 to table the bill, which would fund 180,000 new public housing units, far above Eisenhower’s request. The White House lists housing as a priority, while Albert M. Cole calls the omnibus plan unrealistic and excessive. The Senate measure envisions 500,000 units over five years with 75,000 for the elderly, and Eisenhower sought 35,000 annually for two years.
