Two Die in Twin Minnesota Road Crashes
Two people killed and four injured in weather related crashes on near-identical routes in west central Minnesota late Friday night into today. Kenneth Nelson, 18, of New London died when his car hit a bridge abutment on Highway 71 near Spicer. Joann Koopmeine, 6, of rural Melrose, died in a head-on collision at Highway 4 and a county road west of Melrose. The four injured include Maxine Ball of Minneapolis and Herman Koopmeine and family. Police cite a left-turn collision as a cause. Minnesota’s 1956 traffic toll rose to 211.

Fire kills Erickson boy as twins saved from burning home
A Friday fire at 1006 North Street killed 3-year-old Steven Erickson and damaged the home. His mother evacuated the 4-month-old twins Pamela and Paul through a cellar window while father Palmer Erickson and neighbors aided. Fire officials said gasoline and shotgun shells fueled the blaze. Steven died at St Olaf Hospital at 10:40 p.m. Funeral services are set for St Olaf Lutheran Church.
