A national group of five to eighteen year olds known as Whiz Kids on Skis will perform at Austin's Centennial Celebration on July 4. The afternoon show features upside down skiing on a flat 36 inch saucer, ski jumping, bar acts, comedy, ballet, barefoot skiing and more. Evening acts emphasize colorful lighting and fluorescent costumes.
Senator Jackson warns overseas air bases from Iceland to Okinawa are under political attack and urge a $1.16 billion boost to Air Force funding. He says loss of bases would raise need for more B52s to deter Soviet power as Senate panels raise totals for planes bases and manpower. William Rowland a 25 year old supply clerk for Anaconda Copper Co. was found bludgeoned near a ditch west of Grand Marais. An autopsy and inquest were planned as investigators pursued a suspect, Michael M. Thomas, and examined a possible connection to a gravel pit and a missing 1950 Buick.
A cat wandered into Hallock Presbyterian Church during Sunday prayers. It trotted to the organ and pressed keys producing odd chords before curling under a choir seat and sleeping through the rest of the service.
Norfolk Virginia Minnie Mangum ex-officer of an embezzlement wrecked financial institution was sentenced Monday to 20 years in prison. Judge H Lawrence Bullock ordered 10 years for embezzling 1 082 968 25 and 10 years for giving false information to the State Corporation Commission. Additional terms run concurrently or consecutively as specified on indictments for forgery and related charges.
PIERRE, S.D. A Pierre businessman was reported missing today as investigators consider foul play by hitchhikers or amnesia as possible explanations.
Miami Florida. James Schaefer a 67 year old man suffered a paralytic stroke while sunbathing at Crandon Park Beach. Unable to move he endured two days of exposure to intense sun until picnickers found him Friday evening. He was hospitalized in serious condition with stroke and second degree sun burns.
A car carrying six youths home from a roller skating party crashed into a tree near Gilmanton Wisconsin early today. Four people were killed and two injured including driver Raymond Rowan who had minor injuries. Names include Clinton Hollister Marelene Strum Marjorie Hill and Theresa Hill. The accident raises Wisconsin's 1956 weekend toll to 426-77.
President Eisenhower, delayed by illness, postpones 10 talks with India's Nehru and shifts to a Panama City visit July 21-22 with other American republic leaders. White House aide James Hagerty said the president hopes to leave hospital soon and celebrate his 40th wedding anniversary at the farm with Mrs. Eisenhower. The exact discharge date from Walter Reed remains undecided.
Minnesota Democrats ended their convention with factional rifts over Kefauver and Stevenson but moved to unity. Delegates elected 3 national delegates and 24 alternates, all pledged to Kefauver, while agreeing Minnesota should back Stevenson if Kefauver releases delegates. MINNEAPOLIS A six year old girl died as the eighth victim of a Navy jet crash near Wold Chamberlain Airport on June 9. Lynn D. Greening, daughter of Mr and Mrs Kenneth L Greening, suffered burns estimated at over 90 percent. Four other children playing nearby, Jeffrey Kieffer 7 Jennie Kieffer 2 Cassandra Kieffer 5 and Stephen Clark 5, remained in critical condition.
Mower County chairman Hugh V. Plunkett Jr led the delegation to the state DFL convention with vice chairman Vernon Schaeffer and delegates John Thill Sr Leonard Sorenson Robert Reagan Dave Neiswanger Jacob Herzog Fred Miles W Kell Kirchdoerfer also attended. Kefauver won 26 of 30 delegates while Stevenson took four. National Committeewoman Iane Hunt was reelected. A heated debate over Rasmussen’s endorsement marked the gathering.
A four engine British Overseas Airways Argonaut crashed after takeoff from Kano, Nigeria, en route Lagos to London. 38 passengers and seven crew were aboard. 26 dead, 3 of 18 survivors in critical condition. Captain H V Tomlinson and four crew members survived. Emergency squad from Kano airport rescued most survivors.
