City Engineer Roger Nelson announced a 5 a.m. Monday parking ban on Austin’s Main Street from Lansing to Oakland. The street will be closed to travel for most of the morning while a state highway crew cuts out old expansion joints. work should finish by noon with blocks reopening as completed.
President Eisenhower signed the Austrian independence treaty at Secretary Weeks residence. The pact restores Austria's sovereignty and ends the occupation after negotiations in Vienna by the four occupying powers: the United States Great Britain France and Russia.
Senate action completed on two antitrust bills. One would raise the Sherman Act fine to fifty thousand dollars from five thousand. The other would authorize suits for actual damages from Sherman or Clayton Act violations.
Loretta Young, 41, will undergo abdominal surgery after gaining five pounds. She has lost weight since hospital admission on April 10 in Oxnard California for peritonitis and hopes to leave St. John’s Hospital by late July to start filming a new TV series.
Great Lakes Pipe Line Co. announced a 12 inch pipeline between Des Moines and Iowa City to carry fuel oil and gasoline. The line will run parallel to two older lines built in 1930 and 1951 and should be completed before the fall heating season.
Kenneth Harris 15 of London, son of Delmar and <unspecified> Harris, was killed when his motorbike was struck by an Illinois Central freight locomotive at the stockyards crossing on a town edge. Skid marks 46 feet long. bike hurled 85 feet. He was returning from town after a mudhole incident. He studied at Lyle High School and is survived by his parents and a brother Melvin.
Mrs. Ruth Keith of Windom Minnesota gave birth to triplet girls after a Scandinavian Airlines flight from Oslo diverted to Gander. The first infant arrived at 6 p.m. weighing 3 pounds 6 ounces, followed by two others at 9:10 p.m. weights 3 pounds 4 ounces and 3 pounds 2 ounces. All are reported healthy and unnamed. A doctor met the party on arrival at Sir Frederick Banting Hospital.
Gordon Keith of Windom Minnesota flies to Newfoundland to be with wife Ruth who gave birth to triplet girls in Gander Milmd hospital after she left a transatlantic flight. The triplets bring the family to five with daughter Tordis and son Bruce traveling with Ruth. Keith swaps houses after doctors warned of multiple births and Ruth is a nurse.
Dry air from the north drove Iowa rain into Missouri, with the center now over northern Missouri. Southern Iowa areas reported an inch or more of rain before clearing, and outlook calls for dry, clear to partly cloudy days ahead.
In Los Angeles Virginia O'Brien announces she is single again after a court divorce from actor John Feggo. She calls the end of a very sad situation and says she waives alimony while Feggo agrees to pay $75 monthly child support for their three children. They married in 1942.
Peiping radio reports that Ho Chi Minh, leader of the Vietminh, and his party arrived in Peiping today. The broadcast notes their arrival as a major development in the regional situation.
Congress considers further increases in office emoluments after a pay raise earlier this year. The House administration committee proposed higher stationery and postage allowances, more long distance calls and telegrams, doubled mileage, and a $12 131 a year research assistant per member, with other pay rises for House staff. Senate plans remain to be considered.
In London striking seamen halted their three week wildcat walkout that crippled Britain’s transatlantic passenger fleet. Strike leaders in Southampton and Liverpool urged a return to work to secure a shorter work week and better living conditions aboard ship. The Queen Elizabeth sailing to New York on Wednesday broke the strike’s effective hold on Cunard Lines’ fleet.
A U S Navy patrol bomber was hit by machinegun fire from Russian MIGs during a Bering Sea incident. Eleven crew escaped with minor injuries after a flames damaged the craft landed on St. Lawrence Island. Wounded included Ens. Assard and Technical Specialist Benko as the plane was guided to Gambell for care and later flown to Fairbanks.
The Soviet MIG attack on an American Navy plane over the Bering Sea disrupts the U.N. 10th anniversary gathering as Dulles reports to Molotov. Molotov says he will investigate as leaders work on a peace declaration to close the week in San Francisco.
A Russian air attack forced a P2V Neptune patrol plane to crash land near St Lawrence Island in the Bering Sea injuring seven of the 11 crew. Senators urged caution about the Big Four summit, with Mansfield calling for assurances it was not premeditated.
President Eisenhower continued his New England tour awaiting a Soviet response to a U S protest over a Russian jet attack on an American Navy patrol plane. Seven of 11 crewmen were injured after the aircraft crashed on St Lawrence Island.
