Local 9 10 Packinghouse Workers Union and Geo A Hormel Co approved a three day negotiation on dual gains and 52 week notices. The plan outlines procedures for notices and schedules when new methods or machinery are introduced and sets up an arbitration path if mutual agreement fails.
Two Duluth fishermen Conrad Haarstad and Henry Takle perished when a seiche caused a sudden wave on Isle Royale in Lake Superior. Duluth resident Ewald Soder survived after signaling fires on shore. In Albert Lea, 12 year old Jean Johnson drowned while swimming to a raft, her brother and a friend watching. The year’s drownings total 42 with the Albert Lea incident detailing an after hours swim.
The AEC states no evidence of a major Soviet atomic test for almost a year, countering Life contributor Ralph E. Lapp who claimed two superbomb tests in spring. The commission reiterates prior test announcements and maintains no policy change, noting past August 1953 disclosures of hydrogen and fission explosions in Russia.
A body recovered from the Mississippi River was identified as 64 year old Joseph Fallessie of River Falls Wisconsin. Officials stated the remains appeared to have been in the water about 12 hours.

Copper box in Austin Congregational Church cornerstone was opened to reveal a photo of the first 1868 church, a brick list, old publication reprints, and church officer lists. Contents will join the new cornerstone after July 3 laying as city acquires current property by July 1 1956.
The Kaiser Gypsum Co plant in Redwood City suffered a 212 million dollar blaze that burned through the wall board factory in 45 minutes. Propane tanks exploded adding to the spectacle but no workers were hurt. Fire crews from eight communities brought the fire under control.
Secretary of State John Foster Dulles bluntly urged the Soviet Union to end coercion and subversion at the U.N. tenth anniversary session. He defended NATO and Western-led security, ridiculed Molotov’s seven-point plan, and asserted collective security has prevailed in ending major conflicts.
Deputy Secretary of Defense Robert B Anderson announced he will resign in the next few months. The Eisenhower administration may appoint an outsider to replace him, with Reuben B Robertson Jr cited as a likely candidate. Other names mentioned include Charles S Thomas Harold E Talbott and Gordon Gray.
