The centennial celebration honors early Austinites and families who moved west and north to settle Austin after its founding. It notes Chauncey Leverich’s role, challenges from weather and transport, and the presence of second generation pioneers who helped build the community as Austin marks 100 years.
President Eisenhower enters week three at Walter Reed reporting a good night and gradual improvement. He walks more, receives visitors longer, and again remains noncommittal on announcing a second term while Gen. Gruenther visited and aides deny any political messaging. Meanwhile Austin plans Centennial events with king and queen candidates sought and old timers invited to participate.
Secretary of Defense Wilson, at Quantico amid a Secretaries Conference, dismissed Senate efforts to increase Air Force funds as phoney. He declined to commit to using extra money if voted and softened the remark after noting it may have been too strong.
Officials fear a steel strike could disrupt the economy and politics but prefer not to intervene yet. If talks fail by midweek the government might reconsider options under the Taft Hartley act and a potential 80 day court injunction.
Louise Welk, about 50, a tavern operator in Rice Lake, was found fatally shot in her apartment behind the tavern Wednesday night. Police said the killer fired from outside through a hooked screen door. the state crime lab joined the investigation as authorities questioned her traveling salesman husband Orrin Welk.
Hutchinson Minnesota endures heavy rain with 10.52 inches in eight days. Central town streets flood as basements flood, yards submerge up to two feet, a resident boats the block, and a Main Street business sees water erupt from a toilet.
Winds toppled a 150 by 50 foot shed near Waltham and damaged a Ford truck and machinery. A Boyd Irvine farm site was toppled, and a Doll House Beauty Shop sign blown over. Trees and a 2400 volt line were down as Owatonna Faribault area felt the blow with 25 calls. REA lines and telephone service suffered scattered outages while underwriters logged one routine claim for a television antenna.
Low bids totaling 949090 for the Blooming Prairie High School project were opened. The general bid led by Lysne Construction Co. at 718000, with other bids from Spencer Construction and Wagner Construction. Mechanical bids from Williams Plumbing and Heating 152790.75, electrical bid from Lees Electric Service 77700, and a 970000 bond issue funds the 500 pupil school scheduled to finish by fall 1957.
Henry J. Ruben, 70, of Woodward, was killed on the H. A. Belt farm near Woodward when his left leg was caught in a belt from a tractor PTO to a grinding mill. Coroner G. H. Sutton said he bled to death before responders could reach him.
Secretary Ezra Benson and Senator Estes Kefauver spoke at the Iowa Corn Belt Farm Family Field Days with Benson denying a political applause meter influence and Kefauver accusing the administration of delaying the 1956 farm plan while predicting higher income if properly run. Benson praised rising farm prices and called the soil bank a temporary measure to cut surpluses, noting full operation would come in 1957 to 1959.
John R. Williams a 37 year old Hennepin County deputy sheriff was killed in a late night crash when his car collided with a dump truck at a county road intersection. The truck driver Matt Munn of Osseo sustained a concussion. The death raised Minnesota 1956 traffic toll to 195 compared with 243 a year ago.
Damaging winds swept through west central Minnesota causing widespread property damage and power outages. Thousands of trees fell, highways were blocked, and the Lake Florida resort roof and Willmar cottages were damaged while tens of TV towers and antennas were wrecked. No injuries were reported.
Early this morning a line wind event struck Austin and southern Minnesota. The Rochester Weather Bureau logged winds at 63 mph gusts with 2:05 am readings. power lines and service poles were damaged citywide. Utilities crews repaired lines starting at 2 am, with outages in homes and street lamps reported in Bel Air.
An 11 year old boy, David Howard, fractured his left wrist and sustained possible back injuries after falling 10 feet from a hay mow elevator shaft on his father Loy Howard's farm near Lyle Minnesota. He was taken to a doctor in Stacyville Iowa and then admitted to Mitchell County Memorial Hospital in Osage Iowa. Ronald Peters, a bailer for Alton Wilder, leapt to the ground after seeing the boy fall.
June Shaver, manager of Northwest Medical Clinic, fired three shots through a partly opened window when an intruder removed the screen at her Crookston home. Bullets lodged in the clinic wall next door. Police investigate with a stick as the only clue.
