In Escanaba Michigan on June 20 the body of Bess Mathewson of the Sea was found in a sleeping car berth after a traveling man, escorting her from the Soo line to the Northwestern depot, could not tend to her. She had been en route to Chicago for tuberculosis treatment when she died in his arms.
In Wilton Township near Waseca, Philip Bushman was found murdered in a barn after a wedding feast quarrel. His companion Mike Mulcahey suffered a scalp wound requiring seventeen stitches and extensive bruising. The fight began over an insult to the bride.
From Rome on June 29 reports state the pope has not yet accepted Governor Taft's propositions on friars lands in the Philippines but it is believed he will grant approval in writing soon.

Washington June 20 Senate votes 57 to 6 on the Spooner substitute to the Hepburn canal bill authorizing a president to seek a clear title to the Panama Canal Company property. If title fails the Nicaragua route is adopted. Seventy-year bonds of 2 percent and a seven member commission to supervise construction are provided. Debate notes conflict with the house and Civil War era positions.
