A major earthquake was felt across Nebraska Iowa and South Dakota and parts of California. Shocks lasted ten to fifteen seconds in many towns with reports of shaken dishes broken windows and rattling fish. Santa Maria and Santa Barbara areas also recorded strong tremors with damage estimates up to 150000 dollars at oil sites.
Lompoc California reports a severe earthquake at 10 55 p m lasting about thirty seconds. Dishes clocks and plants were displaced and residents fled their homes in terror. Lighter shocks continued for hours with a very heavy tremor noted at five.
Pittsburg July 29 Professor Theodore Heinsel of California says Mont Pelee eruptions have lifted ground along the eastern United States by three to ten feet in places within the last month. He notes lower tides on the Atlantic coast and inland rises up to four feet as far as Harrisburg, attributed to softer east coast ground and harder inland mineral formations.

He criticizes misrepresentation of his actions.
Delegates arrive in Des Moines for the Republican state convention to debate the platform. A split centers on a tariff clause shielding monopoly, with Lafayette Young pushing to remove the line and Governor Cummins advocating reaffirmation of the previous year's platform.
Acting Secretary Hill received a cable from Minister Powell dated Port au Prince July 28. General Colin led 2,000 men to repel Firmin's forces landed from a Haitian naval vessel commanded by Admiral Killick. After a skirmish Firmin's army retreated to the warship and Colin returned to the city.
The report states twenty people were killed and sixty wounded in the conflict. The fate of the opposing lumber crew remains unknown. The Haytian vessel departed last night amid city rejoicing as the Machias reached Cape Haytian.
The Interior Department invites bids for pine land on sections 16 and 36 in each township of Red Lake and part of White Earth reservations in Minnesota. About 20 million feet of timber across 12 000 acres will be disposed under the latest congressional act. Sales must be advertised for six months in most counties.

An explosion in the Rifle Creek Coal Mining company mine at Rifle Creek Gap trapped miner Bowen. The mine is filled with gas and there is little doubt Bowen is dead. It is unclear if other workers escaped.
In Cowes on July 29 the official bulletin reports the king’s health excellent and the wound healing rapidly. He was moved from his couch to his wheeled chair for a few hours. In Chicago on July 29 A M Rothschild, former head of A M Rothschild Co, shot himself at his home ending his life after a recent decline in health. Insomnia is blamed for the deed and he had retired from management two months earlier. He leaves a widow and one son.
J F Mullahy secretary of the Stationary Firemen Association of Pennsylvania was arrested in Wilkes Barre charged with libel after publishers circulated a list of alleged unfair workers. A mob near Duryea’s Warnke washery dispersed without further incident as relief work continued for strikers.
In Pinon Mesa near Grand Junction Colorado on a night raid fourteen masked men tied three herders and killed over 600 Angora goats about 1000 were roaming. Loss estimated at 8000 dollars. Mrs M B Irving manager of Angora Ranging association is a Chicago born widow and authoress. Other goat ranches in the area have been threatened by cattlemen. Five workers were severely injured but expected to recover.
In Grant county near Mount Vernon 280 Moor sheep were found dead on Murderers' creek after armed men allegedly attacked the flock at night. The livestock loss was discovered the following day with no immediate arrests reported.
A severe thunderstorm with heavy rain caused three deaths and widespread damage. Victims include Mrs Kate Walsh and two Italian workers, Francisco Imperatora and Costello Matteo, who perished near Unity where ninety men worked. lightning struck an oak as they sheltered.
A severe electrical storm swept from the Red River valley westward, hitting Grand Forks at 5 p.m. with heavy rain and wind. New York reports that Atlantic Coast Line has acquired or will acquire control of Louisville and Nashville railroad are emphatically denied by J P Morgan and Co. The two interests are said to be working in perfect harmony.
Dallas reports Clyde Moye an eleven year old drowned in the swollen Trinity river. Hearne notes both the Little and Big Brazos rivers rising again and the situation growing more serious across the region.
The steamer Roanoke arrived from Nome and St Michaels with a million dollars in treasure, the season’s largest Nome diggings shipment. The cargo’s value and origin highlight the ongoing gold movement from Alaska via Seattle.
Federal Judge Keller issued an injunction against G. W. Purcell W. B. Wilson Chris Evans Mother Jones and five others at Gauly Mountain Coal Co. request. They are barred from organizing camps near the property and from initiating activities to mobilize strikers though they may supply miners.
