Venezuelan revolutionary actions intensify as Castro’s army withdraws toward Caracas from Barcelona. Reinforcements under Leopoldo Baptista are repelled at Alto de la Palma, while rebels move toward Valencia from multiple fronts. Washington reports renewed talks between Colombia’s government and the New York junta, with Panama as a current theater and both sides massing troops for possible clashes.
A dispatch from Cape Haytien reports Arti Bonitee troops backing M Firmin entered Limbo and march toward Cape Haytien. St Raphael is surrounded and Grande Riviere threatened. Port au Prince forces were beaten at Archahaie.
Three thousand troops under General Saint Foix Colin confront General Jean Jumeau who backs M. Firmin. Officials expect a decisive battle to occur soon in Port au Prince, Hayti, with mounting tension in the district.
Anna and Rose Glaw aged six and sixteen drowned in Lake Erie when a squall capsized a sailing trip with their father and two siblings. The father and others were rescued, but the sisters disappeared beneath the waves as rescuers arrived.
A fire in Waterloo Iowa on July 28 severely damaged East Waterloo prosperity. Originating in the basement of the Waterloo Fruit and Commission company the blaze consumed three business blocks and caused about 80000 in damage despite firefighting efforts. A heavy rain helped check the flames.
In Rochester New York July 28 five men intoxicated placed obstacles on the Rochester and Irondequoit railway track near the rifle range to stop inbound cars. Car 457 halted but car 454 rear ended it, injuring seven seriously and many others slightly. The five men fled and remain at large as police search for them.
A man once bound as a slave in Hawaii after being kidnapped as a child reveals his lineage as the son of an Indian prince. He fled to California after years of enslavement, learning from a Malay on a ship that his father and brothers perished resisting British rule in their homeland.
Dr Charles Kendall Adams aged sixty seven former president of the University of Wisconsin died in Redlands California from Brights disease after a lingering illness Mrs Adams exhausted by months of care for her husband is prostrated by his death Adams had been ailing for several years He took a long leave for Europe while president and returned to Wisconsin before illness forced his resignation and move to California
In McCurtain Oklahoma on July 28 two men were killed and two injured in a Sansbert Coal Company mine explosion. The workers, 900 feet from the entrance, were placing roof supports when a gas blast occurred and a second, weaker blast followed. It is believed lamp flares ignited the gas. The identities of the injured were not learned. The dead are Andrew Dalzell and James Brown.
Chicago reports attorney Lockwood Hon ore paid 8045.15 in docket fees for probating the Palmer estate valued at over 8 million dollars. In Whitlippi West Virginia a police chief killer is believed found and pursued with bloodhounds. In Louisville a shooting over a dime theft left one dead and two wounded after an ambulance collision and streetcar crash.
Frank Carlson and George Baldwin, both nineteen, clashed over two girls in Portland on July 28. The bare knuckle fight lasted about twenty minutes in a secluded area. Carlson collapsed from a stomach blow and died. Baldwin is jailed.
At Mine Workers national HQ Indianapolis July 28 no habeas corpus delays will hinder release actions for arrestees under Judge Jackson Parkersburg order Secretary Wilson says none of the detained spoke after the restraining order and only Mother Jones spoke. Arrestees freed only if habeas corpus suits decide. Delegates from Polish and Lithuanian Wyomings valley meet to seek aid from Polish and Lithuanian communities for strikers.
In Baltimore on July 28 the rumor of an Atlantic Coast Line take over of the Louisville and Nashville railroad, controlled by J Pierpont Morgan and Co, circulates in financial circles. The deal, reportedly at 150 dollars a share, would require about 90 million dollars for completion to create a 9400 mile system.
In West Superior on July 28 James Taylor master of the tug Abbott shot George Wilson engineer of the tug Raber after a quarrel over unionism. Wilson was struck twice once in the hand and once in the stomach and is expected to die. Taylor is under arrest in Duluth.
The draft treaty between Great Britain and China is conditionally accepted by China. Clause eight, on abolishing likin, awaits British approval. It proposes a surtax of 1.5 times the 1901 protocol duty in exchange for abolishing likin dues stations barriers and all internal taxes on British goods plus guaranteed protection from exactions and delays.
Wilkesbarre Pennsylvania July 28 the eleventh week of the anthracite miners strike shows no change in the situation though rumors persist of a company attempting to restart a colliery this week. Companies have coal and iron policemen ready to prevent trouble and would need a sufficient crew of miners and laborers to resume operations.
A southbound International and Great Northern passenger train was wrecked three miles south of White House Texas after a washout. The engine telescoped the tender. The fireman was killed and the engineer injured in the accident near Tyler on July 28.
In San Francisco on July 28 a 130 year old Indian resident named Aupi Mari Mari has died. The obituary promises a romantic life story but provides few verifiable details in the readable fragment.
The Illinois District Telegraph Company announces settlement of a week long messenger boys strike in Chicago. W J Lloyd, company president, met with strike committee and reached terms including increased wages and overtime pay. Night messengers returned to work before midnight and day boys to report in the morning.
Hartford Connecticut July 28 The Teamsters union comprising 480 members voted to strike to gain recognition. Negotiations over weeks centered on wage increases and union status with employers willing to raise wages individually but opposing union recognition as a group.
London dispatch says General Lord Methuen, wounded and captured by the Boers but later released, arrived in England early this month and has undergone a successful operation to remove bullets from his leg.
Waiters in Trieste cafes and restaurants strike over wage regularization and abolition of tips as employers refuse to grant their demands. The action centers on July 28 with workers seeking stable pay and end to tipping practice.
In Springfield Ohio on July 28 Homer Seekford fired at Mrs Fleck while following her home from church. A stray bullet hit Mrs William Gebauer in the back and she died within an hour. Seekford was captured by police as a crowd threatened violence.
In Cincinnati on July 28 a quarrel left William O. Banks a colored musician dead after being shot by Thomas Giltenenan. two women in the same house were wounded. In a separate incident Minnie Chase was fatally shot by Jennie Wagner amid jealousy.
In El Paso on July 28 a famed desperado known as Black Jack MacDonald was killed in a Juarez saloon by an American whose name is unknown. The fatal fight followed a dice game in which MacDonald and three Americans wagered. Two of the Americans were hurt.
