Survivors in Shelter Cove Wreck Reached Sixteen

At Francisco on July 24 the Columbia wreck left sixteen more survivors aboard the vessel landing at Shelter Cove. Three bodies recovered and ninety unaccounted. list now shows 160 survivors from 57 aboard. Officers and crew testified on collision with the steamship San Pedro about foggy weather and a starboard collision. Women survivors praised, men denounced for aiding.

Richardson Attacks Pinkertons in Haywood Case

Attorney Moyers Richardson denounces the Pinkerton agency as part of a conspiracy to hang Haywood, blaming Orchard for Steunenberg’s murder and accusing officials of bias. He portrays Orchard as a killer seeking glory, claims many attempts were unlikely, and pleads against a conviction driven by mine owners. Clarence Darrow to speak for Haywood next.

County Clerk Semonin Arrested in Louisville Case

William J. Semonin, Jefferson County clerk and former official in the election contest period, was arrested July 24 on charges of missing between 45000 and 50000 dollars. Mayor Bingham led the arrest. Semonin posted a 25000 dollar bond. The case follows long-standing rumors of shorted sums though state auditor records up to June 1, 1907 showed his books correct.
