Chicago reports the International Longshoremen Marine and Transport Workers Association may halt Great Lakes marine operations. President D Keefe could order a full tieup affecting iron ore and lumber docks, with potential Cleveland talks and a wider sympathetic strike threatening lake commerce. Arrests and protests also surface in Paris linked to clerical tensions.
In Paris on July 23 after prize distribution at a school run by an unauthorized congregation in Parmentier venue, violent speeches denounced the government's action. Fighting broke out as the crowd clashed with police, who were forced to retreat.
James Johnson, a longtime Princeton vender and a notable campus figure, died in Princeton New Jersey. Born October 2 1815 in Easton Maryland he was enslaved by Teakle Wallis at fifteen then gained freedom after Miss Provost purchased him for 550 dollars. He worked at the university for fifty years supporting the gymnasium fund and carried his benefactress receipt until his death. He will be buried Thursday from the Presbyterian church.
United Mine Workers assemblies in Wilkesbarre Pennsylvania met and heard delegates from the Indianapolis national convention. Speakers urged strong support for the Entcrhacite strike and pledged aid to the strikers. Relief plans will start after President Mitchell’s arrival and views are gathered.
A hail storm moved southeast over New Richmond at 5 30 p m destroying crops and breaking many windows. The county asylum and poorhouse suffered 50 broken windows and hail as deep as three feet stacked against its walls. The storm spanned about two miles in width.
The Missouri Democratic convention adjourned sine die after nominating John A Knott for railway and warehouse commissioner long term and Joseph P Rice for short term. Joseph P Carrington was renominated for superintendent of public instruction. William A Rothwell was named state committee chairman and Dr D H Shields served as temporary chair. The platform backs Kansas City silver policy and anti trust measures while endorsing Governor Dockery and nominating William Joel Stone for the next gubernatorial race.
Dr A A Ames mayor of Minneapolis says his brother Fred W Ames resigned to Europe and he may end the fight against enemies in Minneapolis. He states police bribes are common and that city police forces in cities of that size are broadly corrupt.
The Nebraska supreme court declares there is no legally appointed Omaha fire and police board and that the governor must appoint one. The ten year legal battle in the Omaha police board case concludes with the decision, and no writ directing the governor to act is required.
The mayor declares sole authority to appoint the fire and police board, centralizing control over public safety appointments. Officials expect a streamlined process with reduced interdepartmental delay and clearer accountability.
Hamburg report says 61 bodies recovered from the Elbe excursion boat Primus. Missing cited at 104 as inquiry reveals severe lack of life saving gear on Elbe steamers. Primus had six life belts and one boat. Dolphin later arrived with 400 aboard but only one seven-person boat.
A current report claims Armour & Co has absorbed the Hammond Packing company and the G. H. Hammond Co. G. H. Hammond Co. holds 3.6 million dollars in stock and 550 thousand in bonds, while Hammond Packing has 1.5 million dollars in capital stock. Plants are at Hammond and South Chicago and at St. Joseph Missouri and Scranton Pennsylvania. Twenty five priests and seventy laymen from Greek Catholic churches met with Rev Andrew Hodoboy to discuss a proposed constitution and bylaws, with action postponed to the Hazleton convention on October 20, 1902.
Railroad officials in Havre report the Great Northern will swap its Japanese labor force for Italian workers. The system employs over 1,000 Japanese in Montana, with an interpreter arranging for about 100 Italians to be housed locally. The wage rate will be 16 cents per hour.
Vienna July 23 report storms Monday caused widespread damage across the countryside. Villages flooded, houses swept away, and a church at Zupine was struck and collapsed. Four deaths attributed to lightning are reported.
Judge H. L. Buck of Winona will succeed L. A. Rosing as chairman of the Democratic state central committee and executive head of the Democratic campaign machine in St Paul on July 23.
Governor Ferguson delays ruling in the commutation case of Samuel Bruner a Seminole negro boy accused of killing Martin West near Violet Springs Oklahoma on December 24. He fears mob action if commuted and further violence if not. Bruner to be moved before either side reaches him. A recent Seminole nation lynching followed the murder of West.
In Cincinnati on July 23 Senator Aker affirmed a reporter’s quote on the 1904 Republican candidate. He said Roosevelt is the only man seriously considered by the large public, with a few fringe partisans unable to sustain any other contender as the flames fade.
Local authorities warn consular corps that Cape Haytien faces land and sea assault and that foreigners’ safety cannot be guaranteed. Consuls request the French cruiser D Assas now at Port au Prince, but the French minister says Port au Prince cannot permit sending it to Cape Haytien.
A $20 gold certificate split into two parts was mailed today to the Treasury and the New York customs collector, with a letter signed Conscientia explaining the act. The unusual contribution is noted as one of the most remarkable in treasury history.
Secretary Root forwarded the findings in the court martial of Major Edwin F. Glenn and two others to President Roosevelt and recommended approval of the sentences. Glenn was found guilty of administering the water cure and sentenced to one month’s suspension and a $50 fine. Lieutenant Cook was acquitted of ordering the killing of three Filipino prisoners. Keokuk Iowa July 23 The flood center moves toward Quincy with the river at its peak there and stable. Lime Kiln levee north of Quincy and Hunt levee face danger as workers man defenses. Mississippi River fell nine inches in the last day, while St Francisville Missouri reports near evacuation of refugees.
Camden South Carolina with about 1000 residents faces complete destruction as fire sweeps the town. The Columbia fire department rushed to the scene by special train. Camden’s telegraph office burned cutting communication. The post office and bank block is ablaze with little chance to save any of its fifteen business buildings.
In Peoria Illinois river hits 21 feet and at 10 am dykes near Pekin fail, taking 1000 feet of Peoria and Pekin terminal railway tracks. Water pours through the crevasse flooding hundreds of acres of grain previously undamaged by the break.
Springfield July 23 The Maoi s river continues to rise at Beardstown reaching seventeen feet above low water mark. Damage to crops in low lands climbs into thousands of dollars with River View park in Beardstown five feet under water.
Rome Ga July 23 John R Mc Gehee charged with murdering Confederate veteran L F Miller in county court last days, suicides in his cell by cutting his throat with a sharp shoe string.
Contracts awarded by American Ship Building Co for three steel ships costing 840000. G A Tomlinson orders a 400 foot duplicate of the Sultana, while Commodore A B Wolvin places two orders for the Provident Steamship Co. Each vessel to be 400 feet overall. In Columbus a batterine manufacturers meeting approves action to test oleomargarine law constitutionality, with New York constitutional lawyers involved.
