A Defiance sale in Austin promises half price on summer hats skirts jackets and suits plus wash goods and Geisha waists. The ad touts new bright stock with prices below cost for 30 days and emphasizes value and selection.
A War Department board approved plans for new military buildings and expansions in North and South Dakota, Montana, Minnesota and Washington. Allocations include Fort Lincoln and Fort Meade upgrades, Fort Snelling reconstruction, and Vancouver Barracks expansion to accommodate larger garrisons and new infantry and cavalry units.
A Manhattan Beach conference featured U S Senator F T Dubois of Idaho ex Senator R F Pettigrew of South Dakota Professor Garrett Cropper of South Dakota and George Shibley of Washington. They discussed forming a new national party to unite the Liberal Democracy groups already in New York Massachusetts New Jersey Ohio and Iowa.
In Rome on July 22 a congregation meeting approved Rev. James J. Keane of Minneapolis as bishop of the Cheyenne Wyoming diocese. The Sioux Falls diocese will be divided with Lead as the residence for the new bishop, Rev. J. N. Stakha of St. Paul.
The Assumption Independent of Pana Illinois announces it will begin publishing the Holy Bible this week starting with Genesis and continuing until the entire text is released. The project is planned to take fifty years to complete.

Clarinda Iowa July 22 Tip Young a young farmer from Taylor county drowned in Nodaway flood waters three miles north of Clarinda. His body was recovered.
Residents suspect Harry Tracy alias Severance, vanished after escaping Oregon prison, killed Joe Blackburn near Gordon Wisconsin four years ago. Blackburn found slain by an axe with two wallets emptied from the scene, suggesting robbery motive.
In Buffalo on July 22 Dennis Bowen, a circus watchman, fired at J. K. Shumate after a reprimand and fatally shot Lee Bruce. Bowen was seized by crowd but rescued by detectives and police after severe beating. he faced lynching as attendants broke through to aid him.
In Greensburg Pennsylvania on July 22 William S Byers prominent lawyer and Democratic nominee for Congress was arrested amid the probe into the alleged theft of nearly a quarter of a million dollars in cash and bonds from Jacob Byers. The arrest marks the climax of the case as authorities pursue charges of larceny.
Information sworn by Jacob Byers, alleged owner of lost bonds and funds, alleges larceny by bailee and two counts of larceny. Prepared by Rev C R Ferner before Justice Lyman Loucks in Alverton. Bail set at 250000 dollars.
George William Cook a retired British soldier is under arrest in Halifax for the murder of his wife Lydia Arnold whom he married six weeks earlier. He allegedly cut her throat with a razor at the Albemarle apartment and then went to sleep in the bed where she lay. The crime occurred at Eliza Arnold’s residence, where the couple had lived since marriage. Eliza heard the scream about 6:30 and found Lydia on the floor with a fatal throat wound.
William Delap was wounded in the shoulder and robbed of 1100 dollars and a gold watch on the outskirts of Lafollette Tennessee while riding through woods after answering an Odd Fellows distress signal. Bloodhounds and two Knoxville officers tracked the trail but did not complete arrests, citing danger of lynching amid local excitement.
Jackson Kentucky on July 22 reports Town Marshal James Cockrill shot from a second story courthouse window by unknown assailants. Six shots fired, two hit Cockrill as he moved along Main Street. He is brother of Thomas Cockrill, whose Bechtill county trial for killing Benjamin Harges has renewed a desperate feud. Condition of agriculture.
The 1900 census bulletin shows 5 739 657 farms valued at 16 674 694 247 dollars. Buildings are 3 560 198 191 and lands and improvements 2 114 492 056. Farm implements 761 261 550 and livestock 3 078 050 041. Total farm property 20 514 001 838. Texas leads in farms and acreage. Iowa has most improved land. Missouri Iowa Illinois Indiana Ohio Pennsylvania New York key states contributing 44 percent of farm property value and 38 percent of farm products.
An oil well fire near Jennings Louisiana was put out in the afternoon using steam generated by nine boilers with two four inch pipe lines. Operators kept steam pressure at 125 pounds and covered flames from multiple directions. One pump supplied water and another chemicals, though chemicals were not needed.
May Yohe files a grand larceny charge against former Captain Putman Bradlee Strong. Yohe reports jewels valued at 250000 missing from Knickerbocker Safe Deposit, with pawn tickets for 100000 recovered. Strong is at large after disappearing from Hastings home.
Hamburg reports 50 to 60 dead after the Primus owned by Hamburg American line is cut in two by the tug Hansa on the Elbe near Blankenese. Rescue attempts save about sixty passengers as divers recover bodies and the ship is expected to be floated for a final count.
River levels peaked along the Mississippi south of Keokuk with a foot rise near Canton Quincy Le grange and Hannibal. Debris and drift from overflowed lowlands clog the water as rabbits and wreckage ride on logs.
The Philadelphia Public Ledger was purchased by Adolph Ochs from George W. Drexel and the Drexel estate. Ownership transfers immediately and includes the Ledger estate and about half a block of Chestnut Street property facing Independence Hall. Reported price exceeds 2.25 million dollars.
Peoria Illinois July 22 The Illinois river climbs to 21.4 feet above low water mark the highest in ten years Reports from down river points say crop damage grows daily and has reached into thousands of dollars across affected areas.
Senator Hanna takes up the case of Dr. Russell Wilson of Milan Ohio a young physician sentenced to death in Nicaragua for alleged participation in a filibustering voyage. He was captured on a Nicaraguan vessel and his family and education are noted.
Port au Prince reports General Jean Jumeau supporting Firmin heads to the capital while General Salnave moves from Cape Haytien to attack Nord. The provisional government is split into four factions, with no clear authority and a divided population. Firmin is expected to face little resistance in his advance.
