The Record Herald reports a power struggle between Gould and Harriman interests over transcontinental traffic. Goulds claim a large share through Rio Grande routes, while Harrimans may withhold connections. A rate cut could push traffic to Ogden via Grand Junction and Pueblo toward Missouri Pacific for St Louis. Northern Pacific plans a Portland cut off from Missoula adding further tension.
Appleton Wis Jan 18 On Monday morning at least four more mills will come under striker control. The Patten paper mills in Appleton the Outagamie paper mills in Kaukauna the Thilmany mills in Kaukauna and the Combined Locks mill in Combined Locks will shut down. These mills are among the Wests largest. The Thilmany mills operate five machines the Combined Locks mill four on print paper for major Western newspapers.

Also reported Captain Joseph Ellsworth, famed American yacht captain, died at 71 in Bayonne New Jersey. He steered Puritan to victory in 1885 and Mayflower in 1886 for the Americas Cup.
