The House moves to quick consideration of a 548 million emergency Air Force construction bill authorizing bases for intercontinental missiles and other missile projects. Probes into overall defense status continue as partisan tensions flare over blame for the situation.
Washington report states the Pentagon would not disclose where or when a crash involving a nuclear weapons casing occurred or whether multiple incidents happened. A 1950 California B29 crash confirmed carrying an atomic bomb outer casing that did not explode, with pilots saying there was no possibility of a nuclear explosion.

The Humane Society in Minneapolis reproached Archbishop William O Brady of St Paul for light hearted remarks about the Austin Rocket Society using live mice. The group has a court order restraining further mouse use and seeks a permanent injunction. Sister Duns Scotus advises keeping the mice on the ground.
Los Angeles reports that actress Marguerite Chapman, aged 40, was convicted of driving while intoxicated. The case outlines her legal process and the sentence following the verdict.
GENOA Italy The Norwegian tanker Seirstad split in two amid a Mediterranean storm and 28 crew members were rescued. Captain A C W Latour said 10 crewmen were missing as a search continued about 100 miles east of Majorca. The Dutch freighter Bintang reported rescuing the 28.
The Navy disclosed delivery of two lightweight torpedoes to the fleet as part of a broader antisubmarine warfare push. The Mark 43 can be launched from ships or aircraft, while the Mark 32 is for ship launching only.
President Eisenhower sends a bill to Congress proposing at least six percent raises for most service members with merit increases. The plan costs about one billion dollars annually and would take effect July 1, giving services flexibility in raises beyond seniority.
Rep. August H. Andresen 67 died Tuesday in Washington of a heart attack while treated for an intestinal disorder. Funeral services will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at United Lutheran Church in Red Wing with burial in Oakwood Cemetery. Rev. Orville Wold will officiate. He had been a longtime member of the church and body will arrive in Red Wing Friday. Andresen’s wife died a year ago and he is survived by his brother Carl M. Andresen of San Francisco.
Minnesota State Senator P J Holand considering a bid to succeed late Representative August Andresen. He has not decided despite inquiries and calls from supporters. Henry M Gallagher proposes Don Brown of Waseca as a Republican alternative. Brown publishes the Waseca Herald and Journal.
A hearing on a motion for a new trial for Donald Gaedy, 33, delayed from Saturday, is rescheduled to January 31 by District Judge Warren Plunkett. Gaedy, paralyzed since a July 20, 1955 pool accident, lost a $600,000 civil suit to the city December 13. His attorney William De Parcy sought the delay due to his mother’s hip injury. Austin attorneys agreed to the extension.
Dr. Paul Dudley White, chief heart consultant for President Eisenhower, warns Americans sit too long, especially in cars. He cites cardiograph studies of 600 southern Italian men and 600 Cretans with far fewer heart cases, contrasting Boston Italians with high heart disease due to auto use.
Lyall Larson a Sargeant area farmer was named Minnesota Farm Manager of the Year at the University of Minnesota Farm and Home Week. The award recognized Larson’s operations above regional averages and his 160 acre farm northeast of Sargeant where he raises turkeys beef and hogs.
Official readings at 8 30 show 32 degrees with 25 degree low and 35 degree high for the previous 24 hours. Cloudy conditions prevail.
