Gov. Orville L. Freeman faces questions from Minnesota students on federal aid reapportionment sales tax and wages at a Knights of Columbus Hall forum in Austin. He argues federal aid helps less affluent areas and discusses labor productivity and wage policy while noting reapportionment will take time.
Gov. Orville Freeman praised the Austin Rocket Society and its mousenik rocket during an Austin Daily Herald interview at the Fox Hotel. He called the controversy a tempest in a teapot and urged other communities to imitate the Austin experiments in rocketry. Freeman congratulated 17 year old Richard King, a Rocket Club founder, at a student forum and Safety Council meeting asking when the next launch will occur. He noted a December 16 letter congratulating the group on their launch and the weeks of work behind it.
The House Government Operations Committee says billions in U S arms aid have been wasted. It urges a full congressional and executive branch review, citing politically driven military aid and losses such as planes without pilots and tools rented to Britain. highlighted cases include 112 million in tool rentals, an 84 year stock of linseed oil at a German base, and Torrejon Spain base near a civilian field. The report precedes President Eisenhower’s proposed four billion in new aid.
Ground test of the Vanguard rocket main engine at Cape Canaveral in the rain produced a positive unofficial report. The Defense Department issued a terse statement calling it a routine static test of a missile.
The body of Rep. Andresen a Republican from Minnesota is sent by train to Red Wing after lying in state in Washington. He served 31 years in the House and died of a heart attack at age 67. Funeral services are set for Monday at 2 p.m. at the United Lutheran Church, with interment in Oakwood Cemetery.

Statehood day May 11 will headline Minnesota’s centennial year as a year of celebrations spans from Jan to Dec. Highlights include the All-Star bowling tournament in Minneapolis, the Winter Carnival with Miss Centennial Minnesota, skating and ski events, plus a Centennial Train touring nearly 100 stops ending at the State Fair. Invitations go out to Scandinavian dignitaries. President Eisenhower may attend.
