Buffalo Fire Tragedy Kills Wipes Out Family of Seven

In Buffalo New York a two story frame building burned destroying the Pearlstein family of seven. Henry Pearlstein and five children aged 1 to 12 perished with two adults injured. owner Joseph Supowski and thermdaw Karl Bracki were arrested during the investigation.

Modiste Ada Dennis Injured. Suspect Unknown

In Washington on January 13 Ada Gil Dennis, a fashionable dressmaker, was assaulted on Dee Street. She cannot identify her assailant yet and police have not released a suspect. The investigation continues with the victim's statement pending.

One Bridge Worker Killed and Two Injured

In West Superior Wisconsin on January 13 William Colton was killed when thrown 40 feet from the Eastern Minnesota bridge over Stonybrook. Gilbert Ammerson and Victor Carlson, the other workers, escaped with severe injuries and were taken to a local hospital. It is unclear how the accident occurred but authorities suspect a construction train car brushing them from the bridge as it jumped the track.

Miners Still Missing as Negaunee Shaft Floods

In Negaunee Michigan on January 13 authorities say only one body has been recovered from the mine disaster. The shaft remains flooded hindering recovery efforts while crews pump water and resume body retrievals in the coming days.

Roasted to Death in Marinette Wisconsin Mystery

Mrs Lena Christel aged 70 was found dead after a night of fire with her son Martin Christel in jail awaiting investigation. She was a Russian and appeared to have struggled for life as the body lay away from the bed. Nearby, a railway collision near Reeves Station Rome Georgia injured Mme Nordica the singer and her accompanist.

Richard Croker Retires as Tammany Leader

New York January 13 Richard Croker announced his retirement from Tammany Hall leadership at a meeting of the executive committee. Lewis Nixon was chosen as his successor to chair the finance committee a move endorsed by Croker who urged goodwill toward Nixon. A vote of thanks was given to Croker for his services.

Central American leaders converge at Corinto for peace talks

President Zelaya of Nicaragua and cabinet members travel to Corinto on the Pacific to meet with Central American presidents or their envoys. General Terencio Terra of Honduras and General Tomas Regaldo of El Salvador head there, with others expected to join. Meetings set for January 15 and 17 aim to preserve peace.

Alcatraz prisoner Holt escapes in box aboard steamer

Frank Holt, a 13 year deserter prisoner on Alcatraz, escapes by hiding in a large wooden box marked for a clothing firm. The box with a top opening could be opened from inside and was loaded onto the steamer McDowell. Holt remained inside until the ship reached the San Francisco dock, then walked ashore in a blue uniform.

Death toll rises in New York Central tunnel crash

The New York Central tunnel accident death list grows to seventeen. Winold Slitz, who had a leg amputated, died at Flower hospital. He lived in New Rochelle. Richard Molineux of New Rochelle is reported in a precarious condition at Flower hospital. Other patients progress favorably.

Berlin reports Admiral Prince Henry brother of Emperor William will attend the christening of the Kaiser's yacht hosted by Alice Rooser. The Imperial yacht Hohenzollern will represent the German navy at the ceremony and Prince Henry will sail to New York in February as a passenger aboard a North German Lloyd steamer. Play of Uncle Pam's Cabin barred in Kentucky debate

Louisville January 13 The play Uncle Pam's Cabin may be prohibited in Kentucky by law. United Daughters of the Confederacy led by Mrs Basil Duke and Mrs John B Castleman oppose the production calling it unreal and a cruel libel on the South. Homestead Workingmen Contribute $10,000 for McKinley Memorial

In Pittsburg on January 13 the Homestead workingmen donated ten thousand dollars to the McKinley memorial fund.
