Snowstorm Widespread Across Northeast With Heavy Snow

A major storm along the north Atlantic coast dumped heavy snow from the Appalachians to Maine with winds and rain, creating up to a foot and more of snow inland. Nine inches fell at Rumford Maine in six hours. Albany New York reported 11 inches. The system extended into New England after crossing the South, bringing gale warnings to coastal waters and travel advisories inland. A light plane crash in Muncy Pennsylvania killed three. elsewhere, Dixie storms formed thunder, tornadoes damaged homes and trailers in Florida.

Religious Beliefs Do Not Affect Case Worker Qualifications

The St. Louis County Welfare Board in Duluth Minnesota states religious beliefs do not impact the qualifications of a county welfare case worker. Chair Roger Gowman announced the opinion after Commissioner Joseph C. Pinley questioned whether Mrs Garry de Young, wife of an atheist, should be retained. She remains on a six month probation with the county welfare department as the commissioners plan to review her qualifications for permanent unemployment in January.
