Goldfield Nevada December 28 In a heated labor dispute mine owners seek a circuit court injunction to stop picketing and union meetings by the Western Federation of Miners and the Goldfield Miners union. Union leaders vow to fight any injunction to the end while authorities swear in 150 additional deputies ready to act after troop departure.
Senator Newlands of Nevada urges Secretary Taft to suspend the army withdrawal order from Goldfield until he can confer with Governor Sparks and press for Nevada legislature sessions. Taft and Secretary Carmack consult. President to be advised. Officials note constitutional questions loom over regular army use in Nevada.
Washington reports that Charles F. Stokes is to be assigned to command the hospital ship Relief with a merchant crew if possible. If not, a line officer may take command. The plan tests medical officers steering hospital ships for six months, possibly permanencing such appointments. Georgetown Ky Dec 28 all the oral testimony from both sides in the Caleb Powers trial is in. The court will read portions of previous trial records to contradict witnesses. The defense will present four speeches and the prosecution three with nine hours of argument allotted.
