Ex senator Thomas M. Patterson, 70, was knocked down and beaten in a Denver street encounter with Fred G. Bonfils, 44, a Denver Post proprietor. A warrant was issued for Bonfils after Patterson said he was attacked following a dispute over Patterson’s threat to close Bonfils’ paper.
Federal Judge Grosscup orders sale of North Chicago Street Railway West Chicago Street Railway and Chicago Union Traction properties at noon January 25 1908 at the county courthouse with B W Bishop as special master commissioner. The receivers are to lease lines to Chicago Railway holding company through 1920.
Chicago reports the death of Dr Joseph F Pieson from lockjaw after a nose injury led to tetanus. He fell, split the nose skin, then Christmas brought a tetanus seizure. He diagnosed his own illness, guided hospital staff, directed a will, and died from heart failure after convulsions.
In Reading on December 27 Roland Stokes killed his father-in-law Dr. J. Y. Hoffman former city treasurer. Stokes and his family lived with Hoffman. He reportedly returned home intoxicated and Hoffman protested his conduct leading to a quarrel. Stokes says he acted in self defense.
In Mifflintown Pennsylvania on December 27 John and Milton Tabb aged seventeen and fifteen were drowned while skating on a dam Their brother James narrowly escaped the same fate Officials report a thin ice condition likely caused the tragedy and seaprefers to warn others to stay off the dam risks remain high.
Reported lines of heavily armed African Americans move toward Henrietta after the lynching of James Garden a colored man. Deputies fill the town with only 1200 rounds of ammo as citizen patrols form. Alerts rise from Wildcat Clearview and nearby settlements amid calls to arms.

In Marquez Texas on December 27 a black youth named Anderson Callowany forced entry at a farmer W. J. Dean household two miles from town and attempted to assault Miss Buchanan. The assailant fled, was captured, and later hanged from a nearby tree after confessing his intent. no guard was placed at the jail beforehand.
Leo Koebel of Newton, serving six years at Waupun for arson, received a full unconditional pardon from Governor Davidson. Koebel had pleaded guilty to burning a Liberty mill two years ago, but claimed innocence regarding the crime location. Local investigation supported his claim and endorsed the pardon. An effort will seek his help in clearing the surrounding mystery.
In Dayton Ohio on December 27, a third explosion at the Kings Powder mills within weeks fatally injures two workers. Alonzo Young loses a left arm, Andrew Sears suffers severe burns, and the battery shop is destroyed. Property loss estimated at $1000.
Fire badly damaged the five story building at 72 80 Lake street causing about 150000 dollars in losses to the structure and several small manufacturing firms housed there. The blaze spread quickly and some occupants escaped by narrow margins from smoke asphyxiation.
Indianapolis reports unanimous resolutions at an Indiana Republican love feast urging Vice President Charles W. Fairbanks to lead the 1904 campaign. Governor J. Frank Hanly introduced the motion as Albert J. Beveridge presided, praising Fairbanks and pledging full party support at the Chicago convention. Senator Beveridge called for tariff revision and rail rate reforms amid a large, enthusiastic gathering of lawmakers officials and candidates.
Boston Dec 27 Arkwright club representing New England cotton mill interests votes to curtail production 26 percent from now to March 1 to ease cloth markets in New York Chicago and other centers. The plan affects about 150 000 of 185 000 mill workers and many mills across Fall River New Bedford Manchester Lewiston and other cities. Most mills will operate four days a week in January and February.
Georgetown Kentucky December 27 the fourth trial of Caleb Powers for alleged complicity in the Will iam Goebel murder nears completion. Defense rests after few more witnesses. Prosecution to brief rebuttal. All testimony expected by Saturday night with arguments to start Monday and jury deliberation by Wednesday noon. Eighty eight defense witnesses plus depositions and prior testimony examined as Henry E Youtsey testimony faced further contradiction.
Six miners died in West Virginia over the past two days. Four drowned while crossing a river near Sewell when a small boat capsized in swift current. Two were killed by a Baltimore and Ohio train near Newburg on their way home from work.
