Herbert Hoover's office reported a tremendous favorable response to his Wednesday night speech proposing a western hemisphere defense against communist aggression. Telephones rang constantly, telegrams flooded in, and not a single message was unfavorable.
Charles E. Wilson took office as director of defense mobilization and named Gen Lucius Clay and Sidney Weinberg as assistants without pay. Clay was Berlin commander and Weinberg a Goldman Sachs partner and former wartime war production board vice chairman. Wilson urged rapid price stabilization measures as inflation rises with the defense buildup.
Alfred Bergdoll son of Grover Cleveland Bergdoll received a maximum five year prison term for dodging the 1950 draft. Federal Judge Sylvester J. Ryan urged reconsideration if he shows willingness to fulfill his duty within 60 days. The judge condemned Bergdoll for bringing scorn on his generation.
Two separate accidents reported Wednesday caused $550 damage. Clinton Britt, 24, and William Goblirsch, ages 24 and 51, collided at Walnut and Third with Britts' car at $250 damage and Goblirsch's at $300 as icy streets were noted. Marvin Graff and Leslie Knight collided at Oakland and Kenwood. Graff’s car suffered $40 damage, Knight’s none. A hit and run damaged Walter Yarwood’s car by $15 while parked on West Maple Tuesday.

Gen. MacArthur's HQ reports 11964 Americans killed wounded and missing in a two week retreat in Korea, with UN and allied losses totaling over 12,900 and Chinese losses around 120,000. Major hits include the U.S. Second Infantry Division and the First Marine Division during the Changjin reservoir battles and retreat toward Hungnam.
Camp Rucker authorities quoted Minnesota recruit Stanley Stone denying he complained of racial mistreatment. The army probe followed a senator's letter alleging Negro-hating officers and mistreatment. Stone disputed the claim and said he was under two weeks of restriction with issued clothing during training.
A 1946 Buick owned by Louis P. Stolzenberg of 610 Medary was reported stolen Wednesday from a parking stall at 505 S. Main. The California plated vehicle bore number 5K8377 and disappeared between 9:30 and 10:45 p.m.
In GOA Portuguese India a child’s firecracker drawn a cobra from hiding. The snake seized the cracker in its mouth and exploded moments later, killing the cobra.
Prague citizens asked to heat no rooms by day and to avoid using home electrical appliances after 4 p.m. Storekeepers on main streets told not to light display windows until 8 p.m. The measures aim to conserve electricity for the five year plan.
Secretary of State Acheson returned from a brief European mission to confront Republican opposition to European rearmament and his policy. He landed at Washington National after a 15 hour flight and planned a 12:30 p.m. meeting with President Truman amid questions on Hoover’s speech and East-West diplomacy.
Washington reports speedy passage of a $20 billion emergency defense bill requested by President Truman to fund airplanes tanks ships atomic bombs and manpower amid the Korean crisis. The House expected to override GOP opposition and approve broader powers for rapid preparedness as Senate moves forward.
Pakistan in the three months ending October recorded high import figures from non India sources. Open general license boosted imports to 23.46 million dollars while cotton prices trimmed exports to 15 million dollars. Trade with India was mainly by barter.
Communist forces in China arrested four Maryknoll missionaries two priests Fr Joseph E Van Den Bogaard and Fr Allan J Dennis and two sisters Sr Marie Marcelline Grondin and Sr M Paul Therese Sticka at Laolung and other missions near Canton The cablegram from Hongkong gave no further details on the arrests The arrested include Americans from New York and Maine and North Dakota assignments while teaching catechists in the Our Lady Novitiate network.
The White House announced a three year agreement between major railroads and four operating rail unions. Yard workers receive 23 cents immediately with two cents more next year and cost of living adjustments quarterly starting April. Road service workers gain five cents now and five more in January with the same CPI-based adjustments. The deal, announced by John R. Steelman, also delays the 40 hour week until at least January 1 1952 with a study planned then and a possible four cent rise if enacted.
Congress moved toward a quick agreement on an excess profits tax to raise billions from corporate earnings. The Senate approved a 22 percent corporate surtax with a 75 percent excess profits levy retroactive to a prior period as a compromise with the House.
