In a blinding snow storm rioters attack twelve street cars, breaking all windows with coal and damaging cars. Police arrive too late. several strikebreakers and CP employees are injured, crews hide under seats as ties block tracks and cars derail.
New York reports a surge of international money orders and gifts as Christmas approaches. From Dec 1 to Mauretania's sailing, 437,389 orders totaling 7,025,548 were issued to foreign countries. Britain received 1,638,985 and Italy 1,657,406. Sacks of mail carried 27,410, containing 383,319 registered items and 46,020 post packages.
Washington December reports Governor Eberhart will urge Minnesota lawmakers to consolidate all agricultural activity under a single official titled commissioner of agriculture. He disclosed the idea during talks with Minnesota’s delegation and state agriculture officials.
Washington December 20. Representative Mann of Illinois plans to introduce a substitute for his bill amending the pure food law on branding of packages. The model substitute states that if the net quantity is not plainly marked on the outside, the article will be deemed misbranded.
Washington, Dec 20 Governor Eberhart and five Minnesota delegation members met President Taft to discuss the Ballinger prohibition order in the Indian country. Eberhart refused comment, saying the talk was confidential, while Rep Tawney argued the order invades state police rights and could threaten Mayo Hospital in Rochester by targeting medicines containing alcohol.
St Paul December report from the state railroad and warehouse commission urges changes to ensure the commission can review rates on its own initiative after Judge Otis ruling limits action to specific complaints. The document also asks for a new law requiring railroads to modify state reports to reveal local operating costs.
Washington reports tentative approval by the interstate commerce commission of a fixed charge for upper berths at 80 percent of the lower berth rate. President Taft backs a bill to set Panama Canal tolls with a cap of one dollar per ton aimed at about seven million dollars gross, as Rep Mann of Illinois, head of the Interstate Commerce Committee, leads the measure after consultation with the president. Also, the Senate approves Borah's bill allowing entry on abandoned irrigation lands before charges are fixed, covering only old projects.
Thirteen people died and fifty were injured in a double blast of gas and dynamite at New York Central Railroad’s new electric powerhouse at Fifteenth street and Lexington avenue near Grand Central. Nine bodies recovered. A trolley car was lifted and crashed onto a passing automobile. Fire Chief Croker cites gas explosion followed by dynamite detonation. Ambulances from many hospitals treated the wounded.
A Rainey of Illinois resolution directs a five member committee to investigate Theodore Roosevelt's railroad transportation expenses while president. It seeks to determine if Mrs Roosevelt or any代理 acted for him and whether the Pennsylvania railroad or its officials paid any or all such costs. The probe extends to other railroads furnishing similar transport.
A severe sleet storm caused extensive telephone and telegraph damage in the region. Poles along a half mile were toppled and lines iced over, with repairs expected to take several days to restore service.
