Island Sinks in Ilopango Lagoon After Earthquake
A report from Port Limon Costa Rica says an island in the Ilopango lagoon near San Salvador sank after a series of earthquakes. It is claimed about 170 people were killed though not confirmed. Survivors said boats carried frightened women and children to shore as night fell and the island vanished by morning.

Stricken Chilean Envoy Dies After Banquet
Senor Don Anibal Cruz envoy extraordinary and minister plenipotentiary from Chile to the United States died of heart failure ten minutes after the banquet of the American Society for Judicial Settlement of International Disputes. He was forty five. Taft and Knox offered transport for the body. Cruz had returned to the U S a month earlier and first came to the United States in 1882 as secretary of the Chilean legation. He served as Chilean government counsel in arbitration hearings in 1901 and was once a member of Chilean congress and minister of war.
