The Austin Daily Herald launches a week long push to promote pork as nutritious and affordable. A cooking school and meat cutting demonstration will be held at Austin High School Auditorium with prizes from local merchants.
Democrats on the West Coast maneuver while Eisenhower previews the State of the Union and health concerns. Kefauver in Los Angeles accuses California party leaders of attempting to freeze him from the June primary, saying it limits voters’ expression. Oregon backers report no encouragement from Stevenson’s camp to place his name on the ballot, with petition signatures needed to qualify. Stevenson gains pledges from Sen. Murray and Montana’s 16 convention votes, but southern progress appears slower.
Merle Peterson, 32, is the subject of a statewide search after Dorothy Peterson, 28, a mother of four, was shot to death in her Minneapolis apartment Saturday. Witnesses include her children and relatives. FBI may aid. Peterson reportedly returned to Minneapolis recently and stayed at a hotel amid quarrels with Dorothy. Edwin Peterson Jr., 32, Anoka, and Mr. and Mrs. John Ball, Minneapolis, also were witnesses. Kefauver signals possible 1956 Democratic nomination decision after California endorsements for Stevenson.
Northern Europe endures blizzards with heavy snow and avalanches. Norway reports temperatures of 29 below zero and a fatal avalanche on Flakstad Island. Nine glider pilots trapped on Long Mynd, England, and ships aiding the distressed include the Reins and the Peiades running aground near Tarifa.
Senator Thye after Hawaii subcommittee tour voices grave concern over shortage of adequate family housing for U S military personnel. He cites Minnesota families and says he will push legislation for more housing and construction across military branches.
Koscie Marsh of St. Paul leaves the 4th District DFL convention in protest of a state central committee directive to nominate Stevenson pledged delegates to the national convention. The convention proceeded to nominate four Stevenson pledged delegates. In Mankato, 2nd District DFLers also walked out amid similar protests.
Gov Freeman of Minnesota and Gov Hoegh of Iowa debated secrecy in government during a Washington connected radio interview. Freeman complained of a lack of transparency while Hoegh defended past progress and criticized Democratic farm policies and wartime actions.
Mayor Raldy Hansen issues a proclamation urging increased pork consumption in Austin. He stresses local livelihoods depend on pork demand and calls residents to use and promote pork products to support the community's growth.
Israeli troops attacked Syrian outposts overlooking the Sea of Galilee at night. Officials said 55 Syrians were killed, four Israelis wounded, and 29 Syrians captured. Four outposts were blown up before the forces withdrew on an eight mile front. The U.N. observers were sent to investigate while Damascus prepared a protest.
The 1955 USI drive in Austin remains 20 percent short of its $59,998 goal with about 3,300 pledge cards yet to be contacted. Race Crane, drive chairman, notes $48,517.90 received to date and cites Hormel workers’ 100 percent contributions in Fremont as a benchmark for local success.
A Duluth man died from injuries after a two vehicle crash at the Highways 2 and 65 junction east of Grand Rapids. Albert J. Bouchard 35 and Leonard T. Marshall 33 were involved. Kukuruz of Winnipeg escaped injury. The crash raises Minnesota's yearly traffic toll to 547.
Austin taxpayers faced higher bills as the city budget raised the mill rate from 61.96 to 65.06. Homestead and non homestead figures rose to 215.91 and 221.08 respectively, about 2.38 and 2.33 mills more than last year. A $1 000 assessed home pays $2.38 more. a $4 000 home owner pays $353.73 for non homestead.
Burglars struck the Waltham Liquor Store Sunday night and took whiskey, cigarettes, and cash. Manager Baaken said the thieves pried the door and locks, searched the empty safe, dumped cigars, and hauled loot out the back. The incident follows a July burglary with $1,154 stolen.
