Emperor William asked to refrain from equestrian statue likeness

John Grosgebauer of Paterson New Jersey, president of Passaic County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, sent a letter to Emperor William of Germany begging him to stop sculptors embedding his likeness in bronze as a sovereign who allows docked tails on horses. The appeal was prompted by an equestrian statue at Cologne’s new Rhine bridge.

First Ship Up Panama Canal

The American three masted steam yacht Visitor II. became the first vessel to navigate a section of the Panama canal. On November 28 the Visitor II. entered from the Atlantic side with Colonel Goethals, Commodore Brown, Captain Scott, William Diehl, and others, reaching Gatun lock before returning.

Wells Accused of Murder in Police Officer Killing

Chippewa Falls Wis Dec 2 Sheriff Huntley of Huron D arrived to take Frank Wells to face a murder charge in Hawley s killing Sept 7 1909. Wells is a suspect or partner in a two man assault. The men fled to railroad yards after the shooting and were not heard from until last week identification by Mrs Mary Pope and her son George tied Wells to the case with a $1000 reward offered if guilty.

POUNDS A CHILD ON A ROCK IN GRANITE FALLS

In Granite Falls Minnesota Mrs G Halvorson recently released from St Peter insane asylum grabbed her five year old son and beat his head on a rock fracturing the skull exposing brain. She had been committed last summer for religious mania and later returned home before arranging to sell her children with their aunt in the country. She lured the child behind a barn to kill it.

Runaway Dashes Into Train Near Emerald Wisconsin

New Richmond Wisconsin December 2 Mrs William Cody and her eleven year old son Henry were struck by a Soo line train while driving a horse team along a highway parallel to the tracks. The horses bolted onto the rails, the wagon wrecked and occupants thrown clear. Both horses were so badly hurt they had to be killed.

Bemidji Four Arrested in Liquor Crackdown

Four Bemidji men Fred Dailey Robert Mahan Louis Anderson and Michael Wald were arrested on liquor in restricted zone charges tied to the Indian treaty era crackdown. Each waived exam bound over to the federal grand jury in February with $500 bail. arrests were by U S Deputy Marshal Frank Tufft and complaints by U S District Attorney J M Dickie.
