Five Suffocate in Somerville Tenement Fire
Five members of the Cooper family died from smoke in a Somerville tenement at 449 Norfolk Street. Margaret Cooper age 25, her two children Margaret 6 and John 5, Theresa 2, and John D Dwyer aged 65 perished. Martin Cooper and his 3 year old son were rescued unconscious. Firemen found the victims in a rear lower floor room at 12:30 a m. Cause unknown and building damage minor.

Six Die in Boiler Explosion Aboard Paterson Barge
In Hoboken six men testing the boiler of a donkey engine aboard the coal barge Paterson were instantly killed when the boiler exploded during a repair and overhaul. A seventh man was seriously injured. The barge, owned by Erie Railroad, had been hauled to Teltjen Lang’s docks for work after service between Boston and New York. The engine room, twelve feet square, was crowded. the blast caused mangled casualties and a severed head in the confined space.

Court Fines Rail Way Firm and Hiram Pearce in Rebates Case
In Minneapolis Judge Page Morris imposed a 20000 dollar fine on the Chicago St Paul Minneapolis and Omaha Railway company and a 2000 dollar fine on former general freight agent and current freight traffic manager Hiram M Pearce. The case stems from an April 11 conviction on fifty counts alleging rebates to Spencer Grain Co of Minneapolis. The judge rejected a per offense approach, noting rebates applied to carloads but charges based on bushels, and warned against counting each bushel as a separate offense.
