Frankfort Kentucky August 21 convicts Wallace Bishop Thomas Mulligan and Lafayette Brooks attempted escape from the state penitentiary during breakfast hours. Bishop wounded, Brooks shot, and Alfred Ransome also wounded as guards and guardsmen oppose the breakout. Identity notes and blame shift surround Bishop alias Burns and a St Louis family background. Chicago death inquiry questions Minnie Mitchell link to a found body. three men face grand jury in connection with the Seventy Fourth and State street case.
Nine workers were killed and five missing after two steel digesters exploded at the Jessup Moore pulp mill on the Christiana River in Wilmington Delaware. Eighteen men were in the building when the blast occurred. the wreckage ignited and firefighters fought a stubborn blaze as rescuers pulled survivors from flames and steam.
The officers of the company believe excessive steam production caused the blast. They argue the high steam levels were the trigger and point to plant operation as the source of the incident.
A severe wind storm struck Lola Kansas on August 21 causing major damage in East Lola's factory district. Two Aurora foundry brick buildings were demolished and New Jersey Zinc smelter roofs were blown off. Two NK and TX passenger coaches overturned. passengers unhurt except for minor bruises. A cloudburst and tornado hit Pana Illinois on August 21 causing extensive damage. The Catholic church steeple and its four ton bell were blown down, hotels and business blocks unroofed, the YMCA building nearly demolished, and the B and O depot at Millerville blown away. Damage estimated at 150000 dollars with injuries reported.
A cloudburst near Fenton Illinois washed out two miles of track on the Chicago Burlington and Quincy line and ditched a freight train. Several thousand acres of corn were ruined and farmers face losses around 150000 dollars.

In sight of her home in Russellville Kentucky on August 21 fifteen year old Zoda Vick daughter of C M Vick prominent local farmer was murdered. She had gone to the spring for water and did not return. The body with head crushed was found in a fence corner partly covered with leaves. One hundred men with bloodhounds hurried to the scene and lynching is implied if the killer is caught.
The Knights of Pythias supreme lodge closed its biennial session in San Francisco and installed officers for the next two years. The next supreme lodge meeting is scheduled for Louisville Kentucky in 1904.
